Islanders got Carkner. It doesn't get much bigger than that. As I said already, Carkner didn't fight as much as Neil because he didn't have to.

Actually, yeah, that's a perfect example. If they overpaid for Carkner, imagine them overpaying for a player like Chris Neil?

Probably around 6 schmill per season. That's what WIN typically costs.

2.75-3 IMO.

You're notoriously cheap. Good thing you're not running the show or else Erik Karlsson would be a Red Wing by now.

I like to be a little frugal, yeah. There's a cap and it won't be going up anytime soon - and there's Spezza @ 7, Michalek @ 4.3, Turris at 3ish soon, Zibanejad, Silf, Stone, Lehner, Noesen, Cowen. There's a lot to plan for.

I would have offered Karlsson 65 million X 10 years, but I guess he wasn't interested in that long a deal.

A cap or a budget? Because the cap keeps going up. Just like I always say it will. Beer

Both. The cap @ 70 million is a joke, it'll come down shortly IMO. I'm not sure if that'll affect teams at the cap, but I'd be careful if I were them.

It's the principal man. This guy goes out and gives his blood, sweat, and tears for the franchise in every game. He's a great ambassador for the team and the city.

you expect good players to gradually get an increase in pay....he just got his pay docked a bit. We can argue the amount and what not....that's not the point. It's a minuscule value, I think they shoulda bit the bullet and given him the $2M.

It's a moot point obviously since he's signed, but how does this 'classy' franchise go from buying out Alfie's contract to give him a proper raise and lengthy contract to docking neil's pay? Even the term is less!

Uhm, Chris Neil wouldn't have signed a contract he didn't approve of, so if he wanted $2M, he would have gotten it, in Ottawa or somewhere else. No harm, or injustice has been committed.

Anyone who feels that he is underpaid can feel free to compensate his income.

He's getting old and both sides wanted it, no harm, no foul.

Chris Neil has signed a 3-year extension that will keep him a Senator until he's 37, I've been told. Believe it's worth $5.75 mil. #nhl#sens

If this is true, it's an amazing signing by the Sens. Love it!! Clapping

It's a good signing for both parties. But let's please stop saying how he took a hometown discount. He's getting very close to $2M on a 3 year deal. Chris Neil is an important cog in the Sens' machine but he is really a 4th line player on a contending team. The reason he's a 3rd line player for us (or was, in the past) was because we had our best 3rd liners playing top-six. Remove the name and ask yourselves if a 4th line making nearly $2M/year on a 3 year deal that likely takes him to the end of his career is something a contending team would do?

I can tell you that Neil thinks he took a big hometown discount. Over 1M per year discount.

I hope he's not gonna get bitter about it.

I'd say, no, absolutely not. He signed this deal 12 months before he had to, after all, so he must be happy with it.

No, it's because Carkner is a heavyweight and what they've been referring to as a nuclear deterrent (and I have to admit I hate that term in this context). Chris Neil is neither one of those. He may be the heart and soul of the Senators but outside of Ottawa that is not worth as much as it is here.

Right now the cap is 57% of revenues. It's likely to go down to around 53%, so if revenues stay flat expect it at around $65M. But that assumes that floor remains similar to what it is now. If the floor drops (and it will) then I really would love to know the cap calculations then. Let's say that the players get 53% of revenues. Teams are allowed to spend between the floor and cap. Without knowing ahead of time who spends how much, how can they determine the cap and floor so that the total player salary is 53%? I can only assume that they calculate the cap based on previous season's revenues and then use the escrow. What happens, though, if the revenues are at a level such that the money in escrow is not enough to bring the total payroll to 53%? Do players get bonuses? Is Karlsson going to get more than his $6.5M? How on earth does that work?

Chris Neil is great at what he does. He's great at lacing up skates, catching players with their head down, taking abuse in front of the opposition goal, getting the team and the crowd going. Luckily for him his salary does not depend on his business acumen. If he truly thinks he took a $1M+ home discount then he's taken a few too may to the head.

If you look at what Brandon Cussing Prust got then damn right we took a hometown discount, he could've easily gotten more on the open market.

Neil does what he does and he may be a 4th liner on a contender but he's damn good at what he does on and off the ice. I imagine there's quite a few teams around the league who would pay to have someone like that.

Like I said before, the Habs had to settle for Prust and still give him all that money. They would have given Neil more. Some will say that's theoretical, I suppose, but he took a paycut. That alone amounts to a discount.

Yeah, it's tough to argue theoretical "facts", but in this case there really can't be any doubt: Neil is earning less here than he could've elsewhere. He likely could've earned $1M more total (not per year) on the same deal elsewhere. Either that, or got another year tacked on to the deal.

Again, forget about just the fighting. Neil can play the game, keeps opponents honest, scores 10 goals a year and when the going gets rough, he can keep people in line - combined with being a leader on and off the ice. That's worth 2.75-3 on almost any team. I can list half the league that could use a Chris Neil at 2.75 million. He left 800K per year on the table IMO, so 2.4 million overall. He absolutely left 1.7 on the table, that much I'd bet a lot on. But in the grand scheme, if you're happy playing with an organization, you take a cut, stay and everyone's happy.

Yeah, doesn't look like a guy with a gun to his head, forcing to him to put his signature on a contract that is unfair to him. Sarcasm
