from chirp:

Peter Regin
has an arbitration set for tomorrow but both sides appear committed to
getting something done before that point. There have been a lot of
reports about the huge gap between the two sides but from what I'm
hearing it's not all that large.

The Sens were hoping to get Regin signed
for a cap hit between $800,000 and $900,000. The numbers from the Regin camp are a
little higher, believed to be between $1.2 and $1.5 a season. Seems
like a manageable difference.

Still think something gets done
before arbitration...

The RFA's remain the top priority but
Murray does have another issue on his plate. Sounds like the Senators
are closing in on a new coach for the team down in Bingo. Will pass
along some names as soon as I get them.

hmm $1.5M from Regin's camp? that's not half as bad as I thought....I'm optimistic now (if true) that they'll get something done before 9 am

1.5 is close to double the low end offer by the SENs but I agree this could still get done. Perhaps 900,000 1 year and 1.1 the next?

yeah but most ppl would have been happy with a 1.2 cap hit on Regin, so its not too bad. 1.1-1.2 is about even ground between both offers, and I'm guessing it'll only be short term for Regin's sake.

I would be fine with a cap hit of 1.2M if it was longer than 2 years.

How many years does Regin have left as an RFA?

EDIT: Looked it up and it looks like he has 3 years left. I could see the contract being a 3 year deal avg 1.2

I'd be happy with $1.5 million if it mean 3+ seasons.

I maintain it'll be 1.2 - and that's a nice deal for both sides. I love Regin, one of my favourite prospects (he's still a prospect to me) and I see him as Alfie's replacement, but until he starts putting up decent to big numbers, I want to keep the cap hit low.

I learned something new today. Apparently, a team cannot walk-away from an arbitration ruling that is under a certain value, which is somewhere around the +$1M figure. I do not know the specific value nor did Mirtle on Twitter.

Yeah I knew that rule but could never find the value you can't walk away.

Yeah I knew that rule but could never find the value you can't walk away.

I wonder if it's a set amount or determined based on either the previous salary or based on the salary request provided to the arbitrator

I've wondered the same. I figured it would be the 'qualifying price' - so 10% more than what they got last season, but apparently it's in the 1 million area.

I found this in the CBA:

(e) The dollar amount of $550,000 set forth in each of
paragraphs (a) and (b) above, shall be increased on an annual
basis at the same percentage rate of increase as the Average
League Salary, with the commencement of the 1996/97 League Year
being the first year such increase shall take effect. By way of
example, if the Average League Salary on June 30, 1996 has
increased by 10% from the Average League Salary on June 30, 1995,
then the figure of $550,000 stated in paragraphs (a) and (b)
above, shall be increased by 10% on June 30, 1996, and the
ability of a Club to walk-away from an arbitration award rendered
after June 30, 1996, shall be adjusted accordingly. For each
League Year thereafter, a similar comparison and adjustment shall
be made.

Still have no idea if it has increased from the $550K since the date it was written or not, and I have no idea what it would be now.

Very interesting. It must be close to a million now.

Dallas News

Dallas News is reporting that this year's figure is 1.6 mill... I've only seen that number in ref to Brunstrom, so....

If that's true though, it looks like we'll be stuck with both Campoli and Regin for the next year at least...

FWIW, SensChirp believes the Tim Kennedy ruling ($1Mx1yr) is "likely pretty similar to what Peter Regin would get in arbitration."

Well, we will find out Sunday by 9am.
