I'm no hockey guru, but my guess is that they just want some security in case Cowen really isn't ready for the big leagues. This won't be known until training camp. They probably also don't want to just hand Cowen anything, so the competitive nature will be there all throughout. If Cowen is really that damn good, then I'm sure BM makes the required space for him. How does arbitration work though, can you be traded at all if you've been awarded arbitration?

Great question.

I think you can trade a player all the way up until he gets his awarded contract through an arbitrator. Then you have to wait a minimum of one year before trading that player.

So if we were to trade Campoli for an AHL D-man (boy, do we ever need one), then the team acquiring him would still be responsible for the arbitration hearing etc. But I could be wrong.

I'll say this: the clock ticks towards Regin's hearing Friday morning. This is important, I'd like to see him get 1.2 X 2 tomorrow and avoid that Dung.

wow a year? okay then unless the sens walk away from the contract awarded, I don't see him going anywhere. Then the only d-men who can be traded this upcoming season are Kuba, Carkner, and Lee, out of which it just doesn't make sense to trade any of those guys. Well maybe Kuba, but he might be very useful for the sens this coming season. Tough call....and really its unnecessary to trade any of those three, so I just see Cowen being returned back to Spokane.

Gut feeling says Campoli gets moved for an AHL D-man in the next day or two.

If not, then you'll have Wiercioch, Cowen and maybe even Gryba and Rundblad all trying to make the Sens next season.

Then this also must be Kuba's last season as a senator...I think management intends on Rundblad starting next season with Ottawa, no?

Oh yeah, 99% Kuba's gone by next summer at this time.

From boo-boo:

Working on a deal

D Chris Campoli’s agent, Rich Evans, confirmed Tuesday that he’s held
talks with Senators GM Bryan Murray to try and get a deal done ahead of
next Wednesday’s arbitration hearing. “We’re continuing to talk and
we’re hopeful we’ll be able to get something done. It’s always
preferable to get a deal done without going to arbitration,” said Evans.
“We know one way or another, we’re going to get a deal done, it’s just a
matter of whether that comes through arbitration.” Campoli, 26, made
$675,000 US last season and finished with 18 points in 67 games.

Ain't nothing wrong with that, 4 players trying to make 1 or 2 spots. Competition is always good. But I doubt that they start more than 2 rookie D in one year.

I think he will be a Senator this year. I can see them consider trading him next year if a rookie is ready to take a spot, so a two-year deal seems like a strong possibility. Maybe 2 years/$1.8M? $850K & $950K respectively.

Yeah, that's what I mean. The risk of starting Cowen, Wiercioch, Gryba, Rundblad is extreme for a team expected to make the playoffs.

I'll admit that's a great, great deal for us. I would be pretty pleased with that.

Well Stralman, who is about 2 years his junior, had like twice as many points as him and he got $1.95M on a one year deal. So I think that number is out of his range. Half the points = half the dough, I'm sure some will see it that way.

I don't really know the ins and outs of that kind of thing. In arbitration I'm sure Campoli's agents would sya that while Stralman got X number of minutes of the PP, Campoli got Y number of minutes. While Stralman played an average of X minutes per game, Campoli got less and the figure would be the same had Clouston played him more. Etc. etc. I have no idea though. 900K sounds low, 1.2 sounds high lol. Somewhere in between?

It is expected by Bryan Murray that both of these cases will go to arbitration. He could be saying that as a bluff to force them into re-signing voluntarily though.

if it goes the way he says it is, will this be the first time Murray will have a senator go through arbitration? I can't seem to recall anyone else that did (all I can remember was when alfie went through with it in 2001, and it got ugly with Johnston)
