I actually really like the look of that D.

Uh...Hi there Campoli, I'm afraid you've been traded to ____________________ for a minor league D-man that we so desperately need. Bye.
Hi Andy, you'll be playing 3rd pairing until the inevitable injury happens to someone. Thanks!
The Sens have one of the top 10 D in the league at that point with a wonderful mix of grit, size and skill. *
*Never happen, but I like to dream.

I can't believe you're advocating trading Campoli away for spare parts. It's waaaay too early to give up on that guy, especially after now he played the last 2 months or so. The guy can be reasonably physical, is speedy, and moves the puck well -- pretty good attributes for a bottom pair guy.
If he signs for $1 mil or so, we're going to have a pretty decent 3rd pairing -- physicality and toughness with Carkner, mobility and puck movement with Campoli -- for under $2 mil. Lefty/righty pairing, too. Sounds good to me.
If/when Cowen or one of our other young guys seriously outplays Campoli, then I can see us trading Campoli -- but I hope the return is a lot better than a career AHL d-man. But not before.
There's lots of talk about Cowen (or Gryba, or whoever) making the big team. Yeah, well, I'll believe it when I see it. Once Campoli is signed, that's 7 D on one way deals. Even if Lee is traded, Cowen is not being brought out to sit out alternate nights with Carkner or whoever. Cowen needs to land a spot in the top 6, or he won't be playing. The mighty one-way deal rules all.
If you ask me, our D this season will be
Phillips - Gonchar
Kuba - Karlsson
Campoli - Carkner
Lee
Campoli will sign a short-term, inexpensive deal -- say, under $1.5 mil for 2 years. He'll help fill a real need for a short time. After that time, once guys like Cowen and Runblad and Weircioch are ready, Campoli will either have proven himself to be too good to lose, and we'll have some tough decisions to make, OR he'll be deemed replaceable.

F'ing well done.
Regin is the only guy I wish we had given a longer term.

We just do not have enough grit back there to protect a one goal lead-and we don't have a goalie who has shown himself strong enough to work with a D that will have a hard time clearing the front of the net. After Carkner and maybe Phillips there is not much strength back there.
The Wings played one of the best "keep away" styles out there... they thrived on possession. The Sens will hopefully be able to do the same with the D we've got back there to help get the puck up, out and away fast.rooneypoo wrote:111519 wrote:im just saying with that defence the game plan against Ottawa will be dump and chase and hammer our D. I keep hearing this argument against OTT, but no one ever makes it for, say, DET. How rough and tumble was DET's D when they won the cup three years ago? I think Stuart was the closest thing they had to a 'tough' D. Kronvall can hit, but no one's going to mistake him for Chris Phillips.
Good puck management, smart stick positioning, and speed can and does do the trick. It's not that it's not a good thing to have around, but toughness on the D can be over-rated -- and teams can and do win without it.
