In any case no one will take him unless he impresses this year. We're stuck with him til he's a UFA.

Ive been defending Cheechoo and his play all year but if you're adding Campbell that's the contract will be dealt with one or two others, that's all.

Why are we talking about Campbell?

He has a more digestible deal than Soupy. These discussions are not always about "getting rid" of players as much as they are about acquiring a player.

Who better to show Karlsson how to excel at being a small, offensive defenseman in the NHL than Soupy, by the way?

I think it would be a good move.

Who better you ask? Go back in time and acquire Dan Boyle like we should have. Senators send Karlsson To Bingo - Page 11 521674 Oh...boo hoo hoo...why didn't we. Just like Chara leaving, why did that have to happen?

Boyle is completely out of the question. Maybe Rafalski or Brian Leetch would be better but they are just as available as Boyle.

That's why I said 'go back in time' and acquire Boyle. Remember when he waived his NTC for us and then he finally waived it for SJ. He told people at Grekko that he was coming here and how excited he was - and we balked at the last second.

Brian Campbell would be a really solid player in Ottawa and you defently can build a young blueline around Phillips/Kuba/Campbell and maybe A Train if he signs. I get more and more of a feeling that A Train will not be resigning in Ottawa, there is way too much money out there for him.

I am on the polar opposite of that argument, firmly believe that A-Train will take less money to stay here in Ottawa, how much less, I am unsure, but let's make it work for another 4 or 5 years.

Let's pretend we're living in the present for a moment. How do you feel about trading for Soupy?

And, please, never mention Grekko again...

A train will not be going anywhere and I bet yu Murray gets him for a major discount. The cap hit will not be much more than it is now, and long term. I can see this being done well before the end of the season.

Hmmm...not sure I would do that at this point. Campbell at 7.3 might be a relatively decent deal right now because of the offense that he brings, but he's signed for 6 more years and can really screw up any long term plans for Karlsson, Wiercioch, Cowen etc. I guess if you can trade Kuba this summer, you can do it, but I have to ask why you would want to when you have such an expensive puck mover for that long a time? Why not just dip into free agency if that happens?

I don't feel good about it. Too much money for Campbell. He's good, I've always liked him, but I'm sure it would handcuff you pretty bad against the cap going forward.

I wouldn't be upset if we got him though, don't get me wrong, I'd be concerned though. That's a truckload of $$ for a long term.

Me too. I firmly believe that we'll hear of an extension by mid-January. It's the Bryan Murray school of tough hockey and tough hockey players. He'll never let A-Train leave unless A-Train is asking for north of 4.5. I think it'll be Fisher money and Fisher term - I would almost guarantee it.

Better hope he gets resigned because he is on pace for career numbers while playing about as good an overall and physical game as I have ever seen him play.

Will he sign for 7 years, 21 million...? I dont know but he would get at least Komiserek money on the open market.

As for Campbell, the cap is going up so that 7.12 mil is less of a hit every year, %age wise it isnt as bad as it was 2 years ago. Again, I wouldnt give up anything of any signifigance in Ottawa for him, defently not a prospect or draft pick, but if the deal is right, pull the trigger.

You also have Kovalev and Cheechoo coming off the cap next year and thats a combined 8 mil right there. Campbell will absolutely make the team more dangerous offensivly then those 2.

Brutal, when Kovy was signed you professed that he was good for a t least 60 points, now ten games into the season a $7M d-man would be a better choice.

Kovalev signed a two year deal, he isn't coming off the books until after next
year.

Unbelievable how fickle the fans are on this site!

Ya, because this comment wasnt taken out of context at all. A true offesnsive D man who puts up 50 points every year isnt a good thing, you're right.

As for Kovalev coming off the books, I saiiiid, NEXXXXT YEAAAR, with Checchoo. Just looking for a fight today bud? Senators send Karlsson To Bingo - Page 11 Icon_wink

Don't need to pick fights on the internet...I'm married, fights are a given!

I didn't say that having offensive dman was a bad thing, having Campbell at $7.3M for the next years would be!

But Kovalev isn't coming off the books until aaffterrr NEXXXXXT YEAAAR!

Either way I said it, you and everyone else knew exactly what I ment.

Campbell at 7.3 is relative. Do you have a 7.3 million dollar D man, or do you have your top 6 signed for under 20 mil? The Sens need a Campbell right now because it's becoming pretty clear Campoli is just another Tom Piresing or w/e number 6, small, offensive D man you wanna name.

Like I said, I wouldnt make a deal for Campbell unless there were picks and prospects coming back with him. I would be 100% sold if Kyle Beech was coming back, he's basically exactly how Murray would build a hockey player, especially a center.

Campoli will be a nice player when he settles in IMO, but Campbell would bring an element that we simply don't have - yet. The problems will always be in the contract.

Besides, what would we trade to make that work? Cheechoo, Kelly, Picard/Campoli for Campbell and Beech? We would need to clear salary as much as the Hawks would need to for next year.

There would be wiggle for sure. But yes, Kelly (although I like him) Campoli and Cheechoo for Campbell, Beech, and a 1st is what I would push for. Short of that I wouldnt do it because of the simple fact we are doing Chicago a favour by taking Campbell (no matter how much we could use him)
