Serious question, would you make that deal if you were Chicago GM?
The deal that was in question - and the only way Chicago can dump that kind of salary would be:
Kelly
Campoli
Chechoo
for
Campbell
Beech
Would I do that? Maybe actually. I'd waive Cheechoo to the minors immediately in preparation to buy him out in the summer (cap him 1 million for 2 years). I'd replace Campbell with Campoli and I'd look for a rugged shut down D-man. Kelly as Neely said could replace Madden if he goes, but at this point, I realize as GM of Chicago that I'm still going to have to make another side deal and probably lose Versteeg.
I'd also ship Sopel to the minors immediately. No buyouts there, just taking him off the cap.
So in short, I can think of other ways to skin the preverbial cat in Chi-town, one of which is acquiring a real goal and banishing Huet, but at the very least, this deal would take the pressure of Chicago having that 7.3 million dollar D-man - who's frankly nowhere near as good as Seabrook or Keith - AND I still would have Barker, Kjarlmasson (sp?) and Campoli, not to mention I'm in the market for a Volchenkov.
Watch how many guys Chicago banishes to the minor. Sopel for sure, probably Huet and if they're not lucky and can't move Campbell, then they'll have no choice but to trade Byfuglien and/or Versteeg to re-sign Toews, Kane and Keith.
They'll do it, they have the resources and they have a new GM that can say, sorry to have to waive these guys, but they weren't signed under my watch. He has an easy out.
I'd look to trade Campbell for a goalie, then if that didn't work, I'd look to the team that would take Campbell and give me a piece or 2 that I can use or waive.
