SpezDispenser and I agree that when the other trades roll in there will be faces to attach to the new players; but not currently.
Currently, 3-5 years is when the playoffs will be in reach.
There has to be some astute work done though. Whoever is GMing this team desperately needs to put an elite level goalie in net. There's the possibility of there being two rookie defenders on this squad next year in Rundblad and Cowen, coupled with a 2nd year player in Karlsson. If we can't unload Kuba, then that's another player with a penchant for huge mistakes - ditto Gonchar, although I think he'll be a heck of a lot better under a more experienced coach next year.
All that to say that there will be some horrific breakdowns around the net for the Sens next year. As we all agree on here, Lehner's simply not at the right place in his development to be a starting goalie in the NHL - and he needs starts, so the AHL is where he needs to be. Re-signing Elliott is I'm sure something that'll get done, but unfortunately, he hasn't shown any signs of being a consistent starting goalie in this league. Which breaks down to: we have some $$ to spend, but we don't want to spend it on just anyone. Spending 6+ million on an elite level goalie would further accelerate the rebuilding in that the kids can make mistakes and know that not every single time they make one, it results in a goal.
Further, after the draft, the Sens will know where they're at in terms of forwards. If they draft Landeskog or Couturier, it sounds like they can make the jump to the NHL, while I've heard many conflicting reports about RNH being able to make it right away. So they Sens will absolutely need a winger for Spezza if that ends up being the case. Sure, it could be Michalek + Butler, but that still leaves a hole on line 2 - and a free agent signing or trade would make a work of difference.
I see them following the Carolina Hurricanes trend, where they're okay next year until the latter half of the year, then they plummet and land another top 10 pick. The year after, I would expect us to be pretty much exactly where the Canes are right now, in 9th, but with a shot at getting 8th. Then the year after, I see us getting into the playoffs late in the year and losing, but gaining confidence. Then after that, we'll start to look like a pretty well-balanced team.
