Zibanejad's pace is better than Anze Kopitar's was in his 18 year old SEL season

He was never going to light it up on the scoreboard in Sweden like a Backstrom or a guy like that. Fact is he had the 3rd most points out of all "rookies" in Sweden, only behind Pontus Aberg and Johan Larsson. Plus he played like 15+ minutes on average which is great for his development.
Is there any other example of an 18 year old lighting up the SEL at 18 like Backstrom? I can't think of one.

Probably the Sedins and Forsberg

Sundin only had 18 in 34 with Djurgarden, and he was drafted 1st overall.

Zib's pace is remarkably similar to Sundin's, even including his jr. league stats.

Forsberg put up about a .6 pace as an 18 year old, but completely dominated as a 19 and 20 year old.

The Sedins were very close to ppg, but they had each other to play with. What Backstrom did is pretty much unprecedented...

Yes you are.

Doesn't make much sense. Especially not on his garbage team. He's had a good year all things considered.

He needs to develop over here.
a lot of people forget that Maclean had Zib out in the last minute of his 9th game protecting the lead with Alfie and ? . There's almost no chance he gets sent back next year, especially if Djur gets relegated.
rooneypoo wrote:I can't imagine why NHL regular season games would could as "games played in the NHL" and so against his contract, whereas NHL playoff games wouldn't count as "games played in the NHL" and so not count against his contract.

I can't cite the CBA passage (if there is one on this subject) in defence of this, but common sense tells us that an NHL game is an NHL game is an NHL game.
As Michallica brought up, the Subban situation comes to mind. His ELC carried over, despite the fact that he 14 playoff games.

Michallica wrote:SIlfverberg looks great....but so did Rundblad playing in the SEL. I don't think we should use Silverberg as an argument to why Zibby should play again in the SEL. Silf will have to come prove himself in the NHL for that to hold merit.
Cool stat: Silfverberg had 3 points in his first 11 games this year, meaning he's put up 49 points in his last 37 games. That's very rare production, regardless of age or position.

I don't know where you're getting that from, but it's wrong.

Subban's ELC covers the years 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12. http://www.capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=1074. He was drafted at the 2007 draft; then he signed his ELC on 14 May of 2009 (http://forum.icedogfans.com/showthread.php?p=46613). That's one day after his birthday, which means he was 20 years old at the time.

Meanwhile, the first year of an ELC contract can only "slide" if the player is 18 or 19 (http://www.capgeek.com/faq/how-does-an-entry-level-contract-slide.php). Right there, that shows that what you're saying is inaccurate.

On top of all this, his stats further confirm what I'm saying. http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8474056. Regardless of his contract status, Subban didn't play a single game in the NHL, regular season or playoff, until 2009-10, the first year of his contract, as above. The 14 games you are referring to occurred in the playoffs of 2010 -- when he was 20 years old, in the first year of his contract, and past the time when his contract could "slide".

Again, I can think of no examples to the contrary, where a player (whose contract is eligible to slide) plays 9 regular seasons games and no more, and then plays in the playoffs, and whose first year of his ELC didn't kick in. And that's because I'm pretty sure it can't happen.

Fair enough. I'm not sure why I thought he still had a year left on his ELC. My mistake. Thanks.

Nope. If Zibanejad plays 10 games in the NHL, then his ELC kicks in at year one, and will end on 30 June 2014. If he plays anywhere else other than the NHL, it has no bearing on his ELC -- without playing those 10 games in the NHL, his contract "slides", making next year (2012-13) year 1 of his contract and the end-date of his contract 30 June 2015.

But those are only regular season games if I recall. He could technically have played his 9 regular season games, then play the rest of the season in bingo, and play NHL games only in the playoffs....?

I can't imagine why NHL regular season games would could as "games played in the NHL" and so against his contract, whereas NHL playoff games wouldn't count as "games played in the NHL" and so not count against his contract.

I, for one, wholly expect Zibanejad to go to Bingo once his team's season is done in Sweden. From there, his play will determine if he plays in the NHL this year -- if he's ripping it up, we probably call him up; if he's not, we probably leave him there and save that extra year of his contract.

Not sure, but perhaps it has something to do with not getting paid for the playoffs whereas regular season, you do get paid? Same way as P.K. Subban played in the playoffs for the Habs yet the next season he was still classified as a 'rookie'.

You're a rookie until you've played 20 games (not the same term as for ELC). I don't think the Habs lasted 20 games.

SteffeG said that playoff games will count toward ELC, so if he plays any games in the NHL his ELC will kick in.

That said, what have we got to lose? Bring him in to play top-six minutes in Bingo. If he lights it up then bring him up for the playoff push and the post-season. A year off his ELC versus experience playing in the post-season? That's an easy one, isn't it?

I agree. Put him in the AHL and let's see what happens. If he earns a call up, he earns a call up.

Word up, homey. Doesn't seem like there's any downside to playing him in Bingo? I doubt he'd "light it up", but if he did, it'd be great to bring in a confident, scoring winger for the playoffs.

Only regular season games though. And it's 26 games.
