That would've made more sense than Lupul. What I *think* happened is that the NHL bigwigs might not have wanted some conspiracy to draft another Leaf last. Phaneuf can't go last, since D-men must be taken by a certain round. Kessel was unlikely to go last, as I don't think the other players would want to shun him AGAIN (although he is so shunnable), and Kessel has been playing great this year. One of the logical candidates to go last was Lupul, so someone (maybe influenced by Brian JerkFace Burke) from the league appointed Lupul an assistant captain to avoid the whole scenario.

Anyway, just a conspiracy theory about trying to appease Leaf nation. But obviously I'm not bias.
