Ok so between the two of us we've identified 2 guys who might be available who may come close to replacing Volchenkov.

I'm assuming if we're smart enough to find them, that other GM's are too. You really believe you're going to get one of those two (or assume there are 3 others one of those 5)?

All I'm saying is I'd rather pay 4 million to get what I already know is a solid Dman in Volchenkov signed for 4 or 5 years, that risk losing him and getting nothing to replace him.

You can replace a Chris Philips, as much as I hate to say it, he does everything well but nothing extreemly well, but volchenkov blocks shots extreemly well, he hits extreemly well...those sort of attributes in a young defenseman are not easily found.

Just my opinion, but I'd rather not throw out a good dman until I have something else to replace him.

Let me ask you why you would NOT want volchenkov back even at 4 million a year?

I agree with you, but I think the thinking is that we need an offensive D-man much more than we need a shot-blocking defensive D-man like A-Train.

I'm still not convinced however, that this team can survive it's new "formative" years without A-Train in there. And then, if we're to compete for Lord Stanley's Cup in the next 5 years, he would be the warrior I would want going into battle with Cowen etc.

But...it's a tough call for sure.

No two players are alike. Michalek led the league in blocked shots last year, by the way. So you give up a few hits and gain some blocked shots and offense to save 2 million.

Why do you suppose it's mostly forwards leading the hit parade? Probably because it isn't an important aspect of being a defenseman anymore.

I am still holding out hope that A-Train will be giving us the hometown discount he gave us in the past and this discussion is moot. That discount last time was in the order of $1M per year.

They removed the red line and added the trapezoid. That's why.

Anyways, Michalek is playing for a team on pace for 100+...

Me too. I hope he's forgotten about the horrendous dispute we got in when Muckler was here where he almost fled to Russia. I'm sure things have changed since then and Murray will be a much better negotiator. Otherwise, trade him and pull the band-aid off quick for us fans so it doesn't hurt like hell. Sad

I've been trying to glean further info on this yet-to-be-confirmed deal. No luck so far.

Perhaps it's just a matter of getting league approval or maybe other players are involved?

I can buy that, I'm not trying to be a jerk, just trying to hear all the arguements to swing my opinion. I'm still skeptical in letting Volchenkov just walk and take a chance that we can sign Michalek.

Seeing as it's illegal for B.M. to talk to him before July 1st, I would think that Milan talking about how nice the city is, and how intersted Ottawa would be in signing him to say 2.5 million a year hypothectically that is, would start the conversation.

Tell me if this can be possible if Ottawa full out of the play off race?
I feel it is time to start shacking things up if they full out again this yr.

Ottawa

Jason Spezza
A-Train
Lee

For

Edmonton

Jorden Eberly
Andrew Coglinao
2010 1st rd
Or Tom Gilbert

It might happen !!!!!

Too much. If we are giving up Spezza (remember Edmonton is high on him, and desperate for a star), Volchenkov and Lee I need more. Seriously.

Wow, if you switch Cogliano to Gagner, I would totally do that. That's a possible lottery pick to go with our pick - which really could be substantial.

It wouldn't be a bad trade but as far as realistic? I don't think so. Edmonton isn't going to trade all that when they are definitely aiming to rebuild. They are more likely to deal guys like Souray, Visnovsky, etc and keep their younger guys.

Murry has to start looking a ideas like this one, if he still want to be GM next year. You can only put your faith in someone like spezz for so long.

I don't agree with you here. Keep in mind Spezza's value is really low right now because of his slow start. Volchenkov is an UFA and Lee has some baggage.

I don't think that would get you as much as he has in the orignial deal and I don't think they would give us a pick that would get us Taylor Hall potentially either.

Even if it was just Gilbert and not the 1st ,I feel that would still would be a great deal.Gilbert would be a much need help at the back end with a great contrect. And Jorden Eberle (Mr soft hands him self )Hell i will go on record right now and say he will make Rookie of the year next year.Who wouldn't want him? I'm not saying I don't want Eberle because I do but I doubt they'd trade him at this point. Also, why would they trade their 1st rounder when they could keep it and draft one of the great players in the top 5 of this draft. I like the deal because it would be great for the Sens but the Oilers would not even consider it I don't think.
