I know. I've always liked Gilbert and his stick couldn't be any lower right now. Grebishkov as well, he's an excellent defender who can also put up points.

That's why we wait for Karlsson and Cowen for 3 more years because the cup ain't coming to OTtawa before that even if we have Keith and Seabrook on that top pairing.

I think we need to blow our load on a true number one. Overpay. That is the only way we improve our defence unless we are willing to wait 5 years for our prospects to turn into players.

Oh we're waiting on them, they're not going anywhere. In the meantime though, I'd like to get a real D-man for pairing one.

I was thinking the same thing after I posted that. But who? There's no one coming up as a UFA that I can think of.

Well I would say the opposite. If we had those guys... we would be a lock for the playoffs, and potentially a cup contender.

This is what I'm thinking as well. Cogliano would be nice to have and right now we do need some scoring help (until our first line gets back) but we probably need help on defense a bit more. I think everyone agrees that we need to upgrade one of Picard/Campoli into a defensemen who can actually help the power play. This would be a good opportunity to get somebody like that from Edmonton at a bit lower of a price. Gilbert would be perfect I think.

Time to do some reconnaissance and find out why Edmonton fans dislike him now.

No names like Bouwmeester and Campbell in the past two years. You have to go to the trade market...

However I would be open to looking at Gonchar. He is extremely important to Pittsburgh though. Their PP without him is whore-id.

Michalek be a good Volchenkov replacement if we don't get A-Train resigned. The problem is that we still don't have a #1 defensemen or at least a serviceable #1.

Oh, you know me, I'm open to making a MASSIVE trade. For nothing else other than I like some of the pieces we have, but if we could make a package deal to bring in an undisputed number on D-man AND also pick up a Gonchar, we're absolutely right back int the thick of it - not to mention that we'll still have Cowen, Wiercioch coming up in a year or so - AND Karlsson in the lineup to learn at an NHL level.
