We did the playoffs for 11 straight years, and still I think this team will prosper when Cowen and Karlsson will be in their 3-4th years. By that time, we should have at least 2 legitimate 1st liners at the forward position, a good goalie (Lehner or Leclaire), while still competing for a playoff spot every year.
Seriously, I don't have much to complain about, when I know it is pretty hard to make a deal right now, and it's pretty hard to get high draft picks that can really make a difference.

Great post.

This is the stuff the Ottawa media needs to be spreading - not constant negativity.

11 straight playoff years, a stanley cup final, the longest serving captain, 2 great chl team, the largest tournament in the world, etc.

We're trying to stay semi-competitve while we build for 4-5 years out.

that's what i've been saying. 4 to 5 years makingthe playoffs and rebuilding the team thru picks. no surprise guys like kovalev get brought in for a couple of years.

Like it or not we are probably moving some young players to bolster this lineup. Brunette, The Wizard... and I wouldn't be shocked to see us deal Volchenkov and make a play for Phaneuf, despite Sutter's denials. It's not like he doesn't ever lie through his teeth.

Making a play for Phaneuf sounds about right for the Sens MO.
They made a play for Luongo but Florida didn't want him staying in the East.
They made a play for Boyle and decided he was too expensive.
They made a play for Campbell and decided he was too expensive.

So go ahead Ottawa make a play for Phaneuf then tell us why it didn't work out after.

We had no problems acquiring Choochoo when he became available.

I stand corrected.

We need to do something and today would be the day. I hoped there would have been a deal announced by now.

I hope Murray isn't going to sit around and wait for Spezza, Alfie and Michalek to be healthy again, it will be far too late by then.

I can't even blame this weekend's games on goaltending, we can't score for Dung sake. Here we go again!

We can't do a trade unless we move salary. Nobody will want Kuba the way he is playing. Nobody will want Cheechoo or Kovalev at that cap hit. That leaves the likes of Kelly, but an extra $2M is not going to get us anything worth getting.

Personally, I don't think a trade is coming.

But I'm not sure "far too late" is correct. Alfie is slated to join the team later on this road trip. If we can muster a win in Atlanta we could still be in a playoff spot when His Alfiness returns for a date against the Habs.

Just think where we would be if we hadn't beaten the Flyers. An effort like that (except for the shaky goaltending) and we get two points against the Thrashers.

I'm not fully convinced that we can't move Kovalev in a deal to be honest. He's still got something in him and I've seen him play slightly better lately. Obviously not well enough since he hasn't scored in the past 2-3 games. I still think he's tradeable.

Foligno can be moved, if we get something worthwile in return that can help us right away, one of our defensive prospects can be moved, only for someone 30 and under. As much as I don't want to move one of them we might have to. Again, only for a young buck that can help us right away and who is signed for at least another 2-3 years.

I don't know what to do about Kuba, I certainly didn't shed a tear when he got hurt. It's really too bad that he's fallen the way he has. Campoli and Picard are worth nothing right now and I definitely don't want to move Karlsson. Is Lee someone that teams would look at seriously?

You're right though, I don't think a trade is coming, even though we do need to shake it up a bit. Murray is way too patient. Melnyk is not, so we'll see what happens.

Thank goodness we played like we did for the first half. I'm stunned we're still in a spot. I'm even more stunned we couldn't at least win 1 game this weekend. Sad.

Murray isn't patient. He doesn't even wait until the deadline to make deals. And he'll be acting as a buyer, so moving a veteran like Kovalev for young guys with contract left ain't happening. It'll be the other way around unless Spezza is dealt and I'm guessing he will.

He shouldn't be waiting until the deadline to make deals, the team needs it ASAP. I don't know who he's going to buy for 2.3 or whatever it is we have. That'll get you another checker. Which, we don't need.

Unfortunately, the reality is that it takes two sides to make a deal.

There are rumours out there today that Murray may be close to finding some help up front but they are only rumours for now. I'll keep digging around and see if there is anything to them...

"May be close" eh? That sounds like a done deal to me. rumours of the week - Page 7 235689 rumours of the week - Page 7 805406

Don't forget Bouwmeester (allegedly) and Cammalleri.

Thank God we've moved on from the Muckler era when we never had the balls to take a chance on some sort of transaction/signing to put us over the top, eh?

Perhaps but, was it also a consensus no thanks to Cammalleri we'd rather have Kovalev at 5 Million per for 2 years? Facepalm

Why would we say no to Cammaleri ? He was the best replacement for Heatley we could hope to get at the time. Spezza + Cammaleri would have been an awesome pairing.
