Perhaps but, was it also a consensus no thanks to Cammalleri we'd rather have Kovalev at 5 Million per for 2 years? Facepalm

Why would we say no to Cammaleri ? He was the best replacement for Heatley we could hope to get at the time. Spezza + Cammaleri would have been an awesome pairing.

Heh heh. I don't think anyone had Kovalev on the radar at that time...

What was Murray's reasons for getting out of the Cammalleri race? Too much for too long?

I don't recall ever saying no thanks to Cammalleri. And I certainly don't remember saying bring on Kovalev and his $5M salary. Although I did *briefly* think he'd be much better than he has been for us.

My impression was that we offered what we could given our salary cap at the time.

Montreal was able to (and did) make a bigger offer and he simply took the better one. Unlike Toronto, I never did hear any talk that he didn't want to come here, we simply got outbid by Bob Gainey.

Sometimes you just have to be the one that steps up and makes the biggest offer. Murray has lost out on too many players because it's just a little too much money and a little too much term.
