Well, I just read an article where Howson claims that he won't be making a deal anytime soon. Here's the link:

Looks like they have a real hankering for some "character and hard work" or, Hands of Stone, if you will.

Howson's a very good GM, very patient, but something is missing a little IMO. Maybe it's just Hitchwiener. I like him as a coach, but I'm sure his message gets lost in a big hurry.

Looks like Howson knows he needs to make a trade but nothing earth shattering. Seems like he's indicating that he needs to make a couple of tweaks here and there.

Goal-scoring is not Columbus' problem. They rank 8th in the league in goals scored, and have the number one ranked power play. What's sinking Columbus is their 21st ranked penalty kill, and the fact that they are allowing almost 32 shots against per game. A lot of the onus has been put on Mason for not coming up with big saves, but when you're 5-on-5 play and penalty killing are as bad as CBJ's you can't blame the goalie.

Columbus' team is built around Nash but they've surrounded him with tons of good, not excellent, but good forwards in Vermette, Pahlsson, Torres, Chimera, Umberger, Huselius, and Brassard, all of who are locked up for the next couple of years (minus Torres).

With this, Filatov could be expendable given that they have tons of scoring, some pretty decent forwards in their system, and he's not a hitchcock player.

I'd expect Kelly, Shannon, and Foligno's names to come up for sure, with Lee, Picard, Volchenkov. So the question is what do the Sens give up for an elite talent who could solve our scoring issues going forward and be part of the core, but is thus far in his career unrpoven.

To Columbus: Lee, Kelly, SJS 2nd
To Ottawa: Filatov, defensive prospect, Conditional 1st (if Filatov doesn't come back from the KHL)

Small update on Filatov:

Columbus reporters haven't heard it yet but two of the three can see/understand the logic and potential in the deal.

if the prospect is named Moore or Ruth, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I think this could get very, very complicated. I think the first thing you have to do if you're in Murray's shoes is explain to Howson exactly why he shouldn't expect Wiercioch + back for Filatov.

If he allows you to continue, then you try to convince him that Foligno and a 1st is good enough for a guy you're having some issues with. He'll most likely want Picard as well - and he'll be willing to give you Russell, so it becomes:

To Ottawa:
Filatov
Russell
3rd Round Pick

Geez. I don't feel so great about dealing Volchenkov. But I bet we would end up taking back Modin. Clearly, they would be looking for a defensive D. So the candidates would be Volchenkov, Phillips and Carkner.

Hitchcake is terrible with young players. Look at the team in Philly and how they blossomed after his departure. I think he goes to the whip too early sometimes.
