Cammelleri at 6, Gionta at 5. What is he worth? 5.5? If that's the case, I would love to have him in the fold. If he walks, or a deal isn't done, we'll hopefully be able to get a 1st rounder for him at the deadline (assuming he'd waive his NMC again).

And then we have big cap space to spend on July 1 next year. You could accelerate this mini-rebuild pretty quickly I would presume.

I know this situation sucks, but there is no reason to ship Heatley to his dream job while the Sens just spin their wheels. Pretty much everybody saw this situation as a way to solve the cap issues on the team. Bringing in Marleau would just put us back in the same situation. Murray does not need to trade Heatley just because it was requested. Obviously he wants to, but he needs it be a deal that works for the team.

I agree, I would take Clowe in the deal but that probably isn't realistic

It wouldn't change anything to the cap this year, but it sure would when Marleau became a UFA next July and we had the pick of some big names. Or if we can trade him at the deadline. Or if we can resign him for 5 million.

I like the thought personally. It allows us many options.

Who will be on the market (realistically) next year?

Not a chance. Kovy will either be resigned or moved and resigned by the new team. He won't get to the open market. While cap space next July 1st seems good now there may be few marquee guys available. Agents know the cap is probably dropping and they will probably be looking for the sure thing early rather than chancing the FA market where they could get squeezed. Look at Havlat, Hossa, Nash. They took what they could get now rather than chance it later. I don't mind Marleau since we could probably resign him at a lower cap hit during the season, but would he waive his NTC to come here. Hasn't been the most stable franchise lately, with Emery, all the coaches and now Heatley.

That's great - but which ones will actually hit the market?

I'd bet that maybe Frolov, Marleau, Jokinen.
Tkachuk possibly, but probably resigned.
The rest, resigned, or sign and trade.

I get the feeling Pronger will.

Philly didn't trade all those assets not to have Pronger locked up by the end of August.

Frolov - Probably - but no one wanted him in a trade for Heatley so why as a FA
Kariya - He's done.
Demitra - Probably resign or go to Europe
Marleau - Probably on the market
Svatos - He's not even close to elite
Jokinen - Probably on the market
Gonchar - I guarantee he resigns in Pitt
Tkachuk - Career is over. Surprised he's playing this year
Pronger - I guarantee he resigns in Philly
Madano

So that leaves Marleau and Jokinen IMO. Not really a buyer's market.

Outside of Pronger and maybe Savard, none are elite.

It really is. With the cap going down and the lack of many good FAs, next July 1st will be boring

So do we consider an offer sheet?  Chicago has Keith, Ladd, Toews, and Kane up for new contracts next year.  With that Hossa signing, there's no way they sign all of them.

Dream on if you like about Toews, Kane and Keith. Chicago structured the deal with Hossa for a lower cap hit precisely so they could be signed.

July 1 2010 is a looooong way off.

Offer sheets are gutless, they are for organizations who can't develope their own players and need to raid other teams goods.

If there is one offer sheet this year or next I would be shocked, let alone for one of Toews, Kane, or Keith. Any team that offers an offer to to one of them, you can garentee that they will give an offer sheet to someone else on the other team.

Look what St Louis did last year with Bernier.

Never mind 2010 -- at which point, btw, there is just no way they can keep all three of Kane, Toews, and Keith without moving at least Campbell; I challenge anyone to show me how the math will work on that one -- how are the Chicago Blackhawks going to keep their team together THIS year?

I pulled Chicago's roster up on CapGeek.com. The 22-man roster (1 short of a full roster) I put together is just $1.3 mil short of the cap -- but that's assuming that Barker, Brouwer, Eager, and Versteeg all come back for what they made last year (about $4.5 mil collectively) -- which, you have to admit, is SUPER unlikely. All this assumes that guys like Fraser and Skille aren't on the team, too.

So.... can CHI even ice the team they've got now? Is, say, burying Sopel in the minors or buying him out an option?
