OK, I'm looking at the deal as now posted:

The Colorado Avalanche have traded Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings for defencemen Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing and a fifth-round pick.

The 33-year old (Smyth) posted 26 goals and 33 assists in 77 games last season.

---

The Kings get a dependable veteran 25+ goal scorer who is one of the most ardent competitors in the NHL.

They give up Quincey, and a fifth rounder, and off load Preissing.

The Avs get one terrific young defenseman, a dependable veteran D who works the PP, and off load a contract they didn't want.

Looks like a win-win.

Absolutely. With the details iron clad now, it's a good deal for both sides.

You think? I think they're going into 100% rebuild now.

Hmm...can we have Hejduk or...Liles? Ahhhhh!

Colorado is rebuilding, no way they give up any assets to Ottawa that would actually help us out.

Seriously, this move basically took LA out of the equation for Heatley. Hahaha, wow, this is not good.

Puts a little pressure on SJ to do something though IMO. Everyone around them is doing something except them.

Yeah, but SJ has a pretty solid team. There was nothing LA or Pho could do to make them better than SJ.

Really dont know where things go from here...

With less than $2MM in cap space (per NHLNumbers), do you think that's why the Sharks haven't done anything yet?

Probably nowhere until early August. If he doesn't get moved, you wait for the first team to panic and actually offer something tangible.

Isn't Colorado on the list those fags who think they are the GMs of the Sens Heatley/Barry/McAlpine? Just a possibility.
On another topic, I can't believe Edmonton is still interested?! Talk about desparate...

I would say Edmonton is already there. Haha, Heatley is going to end up in Edmonton and we are going to end up getting a little bit more out of it.

Good job Heatley, you're agents have totally screwed you over.

They might not have the wheels to do anything. They only have 17 players under contract, or something like that, with very little money to spread out over the roster.

Dammit, I'll take Marleau, but the catch is, I need to unload Heatley to make it work. Ahhhhh!

Heatley may not actually be going anywhere.

Although, I love that Minny signed Havlat (and a pissed off one too), but they need more offence - and we can help. Wink

Hmm, I wonder if the Ducks might be willing to make a move for Heatley? Could possibly put them over the top again, and with the Selanne retiring at the end of the season, they will be losing some serious offence.

I think it's obvious where this is going Spez. The Oilers didn't pick up a top 6 forward on July 1st and now they almost have to go through with this Heatley deal, especially since the names of the players they were going to trade were released to the public. On top of that, they have been looking for a star to come to Edmonton since the Pronger fiasco and they are desperate to land one. I just get the sense that if we are going to trade Heatley to anyone then it's going to be Edmonton.

It wouldn't be exactly the same as the original deal but it would be similar.

Oh, that's fine. I'm all for this getting over with. I want something more fun than Smid though please. I can live with Fat Penner, but Smid I just can't get excited about.

Poor Dustin, he's being treated like he's Kirstie Alley. Crying Spez, you're gonna give the guy a complex.

And Smid? 6'3", 225, 23 years old...

From Faceoff.com:

ASSETS: Displays plenty of intelligence and poise--with and without the puck. Has the size scouts like in an NHL defender. Displays all-around potential.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Top six defenseman.

That was my thought from day 1. I'll take the salary and get a good puck mover, you take the salary of Smith because you're getting the best player in the deal by a country mile.

Dig in your heels Murray! Get another good player and make the package more enticing.
