I think it's obvious where this is going Spez. The Oilers didn't pick up a top 6 forward on July 1st and now they almost have to go through with this Heatley deal, especially since the names of the players they were going to trade were released to the public. On top of that, they have been looking for a star to come to Edmonton since the Pronger fiasco and they are desperate to land one. I just get the sense that if we are going to trade Heatley to anyone then it's going to be Edmonton.

It wouldn't be exactly the same as the original deal but it would be similar.

Oh, that's fine. I'm all for this getting over with. I want something more fun than Smid though please. I can live with Fat Penner, but Smid I just can't get excited about.

Gilbert?

Poor Dustin, he's being treated like he's Kirstie Alley. Crying Spez, you're gonna give the guy a complex.

And Smid? 6'3", 225, 23 years old...

From Faceoff.com:

ASSETS: Displays plenty of intelligence and poise--with and without the puck. Has the size scouts like in an NHL defender. Displays all-around potential.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Top six defenseman.

That was my thought from day 1. I'll take the salary and get a good puck mover, you take the salary of Smith because you're getting the best player in the deal by a country mile.

Dig in your heels Murray! Get another good player and make the package more enticing.

:^^^^: Kirstie Alley.

I know, I know...I read about Smid and there are parts to his game that entice me, but why can't we push for Gilbert? We have enough guys like Smid and not enough guys like Gilbert. Especially that he's a rightey.

I've heard a lot of talk that Ottawa is trying to move Smith, Picard and Schubert.

Which would leave Phillips, Volchenkov, Lee, Kuba, Campoli and an open roster spot. Potentially trying to make room for a first round pick to play this season?

I say we dump the lot of them on Edmonton in a trade. Give me Penner, Cogliano, Smid and Schremp and have Heatley, Smith, Picard and Schubert.

Good old fashioned, run of the mill, 8 player trade.

The Pens will be looking for a 5, 6, 7 guy fairly soon. They are pretty thin on the back end now.

Smid isn't that bad. He's one of those defensemen that are just all around solid but don't do anything that special. According to Oilers fans he did really up his physical game and he started skating the puck out of his own zone more regularly during the last half of last season.

With that said, I would like to have Gilbert instead but I don't think he would fit into our long term plans very well. He may force someone like Volchenkov out the door.

Picard would be the last guy out of that I would trade personally, but Smith and Schubert are a cap saving of 3.2 million, so, yeah, let's do it!

Either shove them on Edmonton (take out Smid and Shremp, add in Gilbert) or as Neely's saying, there will be teams who need an entire pairing filled.

Yeah I read some of that. I'm fine with it, I'd just prefer Gilbert now that we've paid that 4 million.

I'm probably just dreaming though.

Could always trade them to teams that need serviceable players that can help them reach the cap floor (yeah you Long Island).

Yeah, how's that gonna work. I bet Sather could unload Drury on them - along with another more valuable piece of course, to shed his money and the Isles could use Drury to teach their young guns a thing or two.

I'm talking manageable salary dumps. Not ones that handcuff your team for 5 years. There is NO reason whatsoever for the Isles to acquire any big money talent. There just isn't. It doesn't fit in with their plans, it doesn't fit in with their youth movement and it just flat out doesn't make sense for them.

It's 3 years for Drury and they have to make the cap floor somehow.

I don't see why they need Mark Streit anymore. Sarcasm

They are about 5 million away from the cap floor and they need four players to fill out their roster. I don't see why they would trade like the only Diddle UFA to sign there in the last decade for one of the most ridiculously overpaid players in the league.

Oh, in that case, they won't be taking any dumps, they'll just sign 4 tier 9 UFAs and fill their roster.

It was me. I want Mark Streit here (badly).

Would you sign Sergei Zubov if the money worked?

He's near the end of his career, but IMO he'd be a mighty fine mentor for Karlsson?

But they don't need to when they could serviceable players on good contracts like Schubert and Picard. That's 1.6 million for two guys who could actually play a decent role for that team.

I think it's over for him. Guy missed 60 games to hip surgery and he's 39 in like a week.
