Smyth, not Heatley, traded to Kings; and other stuff

I don't know how accurate this is, but I'm hearing Ryan Smyth and Liles for Jack Johnson and Oscar Moller.

Giving up Moller is stupid, but acquiring Liles is nice. Also, isn't JMFJ a free agent?

Well, Ron Hextall wanted a 'character player'...Smyth is that and a leader who will give the kids in LA an idea of what it takes to win.

If PKC's info is correct, sounds like a win-win for the Avs and Kings.

I don't think this is a win-win at all. I think it's a bad trade to take on a 6.25 million dollar contract for a guy who may give it all, but is injured too much to be a major factor. 6.5 is elite money and Ryan Smyth is no longer elite - and he's got 3 years to go on a battered body.

Getting Lilies is nice, but with Doubty, Hickey and Quincey, was there a need for a 4 million dollar D-man like Liles? For the next 3 years as well?

There's zero choice there. Lombardi took a swing and a miss at the free agent market and panicked.

A couple of things on this.

This sends a really big message to the Heatley camp. I've heard they contacted several teams about working a deal and L.A. was one of them.

L.A. told them point blank that Danny wasn't the "type" of player they were interested, cap hit being part of the reason. Everyone knows the other ones.

So now they get Smyth. He isn't the scorer they needed, and his cap hit is 1 million a year less than Danny's (and it's also 2 years less) but he's half the player Heatley is and much older.

This has sent a big message. L.A. doesn't want him, the Rangers don't have the cap room, neither does San Jose, and the other teams on Heatley's list just don't have interest.

Is it true that they gave up JJ and Moller for Smyth's contract and Lilies?

It can't be...without something crappy going to Colorado, like Preissing for example.

Nice trade for the Avs if it is Moller and JJ going back. I dont see how this helps LA all that much. A LW with deminishing skills who cant stay healthy, and well, Liles... what's Lombardi thinking here honestly?

:^^^^: Holy Diddle, seriously. For Moller and JJ I was pissed it was a broken player and a PP going back. Now that I see the deal, it's actually a lot better.

I was initially shocked they gave up two young pieces for one old one and one puck mover (who I still think they have a lot of).

That is insulting. It's a salary dump, I don't blame Murray for laughing at that one.

Actually, I think that's indicative of what we'll end up getting for Heatley - which makes the Fat Penner/Cogliano/Smid trade pretty sweet from where I sit.
