The positives are we FINALLY have a 2nd line centre. We now have 5 Top 6 forwards Spezza, Alfie, Cogs, Penner and Fisher on the wing. I don't love the deal, but I am sure that Melnyk told Murray, trade him by midnight so I don't have to cut that check.

I'm sure that Heatley is not the only Senator changing address.

That's if Heatley approves of the deal, which he probably won't. Let's wait till July 2nd to start throwing people under the bus.

Cogliano is an RFA next year. We won't lose him. People keep referring to Fat Penner, it's not like Heatley was running marathons.

I think you get Penner under our training regime and he will get back to the way he was in Anaheim. Plus remember, he ate us alive in the Cup final. There's still room for a UFA signing too, if need be:

This would give Murray about 8M to play with. Smith's contract is up next year and he will be replaced cheap from within. I'm sure Murray will also jettison a couple of other contracts in the next month.

Two top 6ers is never a bad thing. Penner could turn it around.

Penner is such a passionless player.

We complain about Chris Kelly, but Penner is a third-liner for twice the price.

I would seriously rather keep Heatley. This stinks. Smid's nothing great either, especially considering we just drafted Cowen.

People can say we're desperate, but it's not like Edmonton is fighting off stars wanting to sign there.

i was just looking at penners numbers and sure he wasn't too hot this year but i think he played alot of that on the 3rd line. given the 2nd line with a little coaching i'm not gonna be surprised if he can reach the 20-25 goal plateau. that's respectable.
anyway it's no done deal at this moment maybe there are elements of this deal we a re missing but for sure i like this better then a deal with NYR. i also do not know where that puts smid.

No. Forget it. Why do we always think that we're the team that's going to bring about the best in players?

Edmonton's been waiting for two years for him to "turn it around" and he's been nothing but dreadfulness for them. And he's dang likely to be the same thing here.

Penner adds negative value to that package.

Maybe my math is off, but right now I have Ottawa with a 52 million dollar payroll. That gives them 4 million and this deal will only add about 2 million to that.

I wouldn't expect any large UFA signings..the money just isn't there.
