I'm surprised more people are talking about this. It's a great proposal. The money's the same, SJ gets a killer sniper for Thornton.

If Marleau cost less, I would suggest him. He's got the entire package, he just can't be a captain. And we have our captain.

But Clowe and Michalek? Instantly the Sens are bigger, tougher, meaner, angrier, hungrier. Everything we want in one transaction.

I think this possibility is being talked about with Murray and co. It's too good not to at least give face time to.

I dont know if Murray is really going to want to take on guys that have underachieved in SJ when he can actually start building his team the way he see's fit.

I would be disapointed if that happend honestly.

Use some logic here guys, who is looking for a star player? LA and Edmonton. What teams have the cap space? What are the Sens looking for? The Sens are not going to be looking at other question marks coming back. There was a clear message sent yesterday and when they signed Clouston. "It's about what's best for the team now"

That being the case, they are probably going to get players they can still mold into their image. Players that can help 3, 4, 5 years down the road, not a guy like Thornton.

Also, there are other teams that have given up a lot in the past like Pitts and Calgary who cannot afford to be giving away their picks, prospects, and players. Some teams are stuck.

It's nice to dream, but the most logical places to look are teams that are looking to get over a hump and have the goods to get a deal done. Everything leads back to LA and Edmonton.

I disagree. There are going to be 29 teams who lose this year. About 25 who are unhappy with their roster from minor tweaks to major shakeups. If the same money goes out as in, then that expands the field. San Jose is unhappy with how close they have been coming, Calgary same, Vancouver is ready to move away from the Sedins I think.... There are a myriad of teams and scenarios. To limit to Edmonton and LA is wrong IMO. This is a bidding war that will excite about 10 GMs with genuine interest, again this is all speculation but I believe the number is certainly bigger than 2.

The Name Dropper and Dreger both mentioned SJ on their short lists.

The number is bigger than 2, but the legit offers, I'm looking at teams who are willing to give the world to Leclaiver and who made a 7.5 mil, 7 year offer to Vanek. Those teams both being almost in the EXACT same spot in the standings, they will be out bidding each other to get into the playoffs and take that next step.

Oh man, I hope it's not for just Marleau. I hope it's for Ehrhoff and Michalek/Clowe. I better e-mail the Sens now to make sure. I'll take Marleau and Ehrhoff for Arshole and Jason Smith/Chris Kelly.

I better go and e-mail the Sens... Ahhhhh!

It will indeed be interesting to see what Murray does. Will he go with a complete rebuild or a mini-rebuild by adding pieces for now and the future in order to remain competitive. I hope he does a mini where he can get some pieces to remain competitive while looking towards the future.

Really? You don't want Clowe or Michalek. Big diddling forechecks with the penchant to score 25 goals? That figure jumps to 30+ when they're playing with Alfie and Spezza.

I don't think Clowe and Michalek were the reason SJ failed - I think there were too few guys like these.

There are question marks he can get for free via free agency. I really hope Murray goes with some raw tallent, if we are taking salary in and other players who need a "fresh start" for Heatley, we are just spinning our tires.

Go with the rebuild, there are enough pieces here in Ottawa with a UFA signing now to get into the playoffs.

I love Clowe, but not in this situation. The Sens should be setting them selves up for the future because if Spezza takes off here and we have our D, goaltending set for 10 plus years, we can work with the forwards we have and draft some high end tallent.

The right move here is BUILDING The Sens, not putting pieces together and hope it works out. Heatley asking for a trade should kill the "win now" mentality in Ottawa.

I don't like it any more than you do. But I'm assuming it is Marleau. Bottom line, because of the lack of a 1st rounder, I don't see SJ meeting our needs.

Sorry, I'm not trying to argue, just trying to figure out whether I should move away from Clowe, Michalek etc.

Why couldn't we take two guys who are 25 and add them to the already strong cast of characters here? Like Alfredsson, Foligno, Fisher, Spezza etc. Can't we have Clowe and Michalek and their good salaries and still build by using the 9th overall? Or couldn't we trade pieces for other picks and build like that? Why can't we have these guys, they're attitudes are no-nonsense, hard-working, grinding forwards.

I thought you wanted us to be harder to play against?

Really? So you want that LA 5th overall? Fair enough. It's gonna be a guy like Kane or B.Schenn (nice, I love this kid) or MPS. That's great. I still like the SJ proposals with the big kids coming over, but I understand the sentiment.

Remember that Lombardi will want to make a splash, but he won't be offering Teubert, the 5th overall + a forward. He'll offer JJ and I hate that diddler. His attitude is no better than Heatley's. And I doubt he'll waiver no matter what. He'll walk away instead of trading Teubert instead of JJ.

I've still seen nothing that would suggest we shouldn't just move Heatley for another first rounder and a blue chip prospect. We can let Murray decide what is the best use of that extra cap space. That to me still looks like the best option.

I do, but that wont just come with brining in 2 guys. There has to be a fundimental change with the guys in the locker room and you're prospects brought up in that system.

Clouston already has a vision and he should be able to do it with fresh players with good attitudes that are kind of raw.

I'm convinced the way to go is building the team for 4, 5 years down the road, not next year or the year after that. There is a real opportunity in Ottawa that Heatley made possible by being a douche bag.

We agree. I like the SJ proposal, a lot, I just don't love it.

Furthermore my comment on JJ: " What the Diddle is a Jack Johnson anyway? I mean really." Covers the other part of your response. Smile

Why can't Clowe or Michalek fit into a Clouston system?

Why I ask?

I agree with most of what you have been saying over the past few pages. This trade will be a blessing in disguise if Murray goes for future over present. The only thing I disagree with is that it will take 4-5 years. If Murray plays his cards right, Ottawa could be back on top in 2-3 years.
