Remember that Lombardi will want to make a splash, but he won't be offering Teubert, the 5th overall + a forward. He'll offer JJ and I hate that diddler. His attitude is no better than Heatley's. And I doubt he'll waiver no matter what. He'll walk away instead of trading Teubert instead of JJ.

We agree. I like the SJ proposal, a lot, I just don't love it.

I agree with most of what you have been saying over the past few pages. This trade will be a blessing in disguise if Murray goes for future over present. The only thing I disagree with is that it will take 4-5 years. If Murray plays his cards right, Ottawa could be back on top in 2-3 years.

Unless CLowe comes with an extension, then forget that. As for Michalek, he reminds me a lot like Fisher, just not quite a sgritty.

We can make our own extension for Clowe. Michalek like Fisher? He can score though.

On top... maaaaybe not, in the mix for sure. I think they have to absolutly bolster the blueline in Ottawa. You have all those prospects one or two will turn out and even if another one or two become nothing more than a 3, 4 guy, thats perfect, especially if they are all brought up in the same system with each other.

This is a chance to build a TEAM, but take pieces from here, from there and hope for the best.

This does give me a little more appriciation for Spezza though. I still stand by my comments on where he is in terms of centers in the league and his play, but after all the BS he has taken he has never asked for a trade or wanted out.

I guess we will finally get the answer to the question: "Can Spezza perform in the absence of Heatley?"

And the much-less-frequently asked: "Can Heatley perform in the absence of Spezza?"

My guess is that both their stats will decline. Spezza will shoot more and probably score more goals, but he's not getting as many assists, let's be honest. Will Spezza buy into team-defense? He has oce, and was great doing it. And if he gets someone who can skate faster than him on *both* wings, I think his turnover-laden drop passes will be greatly reduced.

Heatley, good luck finding another center who can pass like Spezza. Say what you will about his compete level (sorry for the McGuire-ism), there are few in the league who can pass as well as he does. If that pass is a split-second late then that patented Heater one-timer goes off the stick of the defender and up into the mesh.

But, of course, I'm a bit biased now. We'll see how things shake out.

Yes indeed. Depends on who we sign as a UFA - I maintain that Cammelleri's numbers are almost exactly the same as Heatley's - or who we trade for.

Spezza can make a 31 goal man into a 41 goal man very quickly.

By the way:

This is an important note in regards to trading Heatley. He has a bonus that kicks in on July 1st worth 4 million. He got paid 6 million in cash (not salary cap hit) and the 4 million is the rest of the 10 million he is owed. So a team who trades for him before July 1st will assume this 4 million dollar bonus.

Now, either teams will wait to complete the transaction and save the 4 million dollar - to which I believe his price tag for trade should go up even more, or they'll try to wiggle one of the players out of the deal because they have to pay the 4 million.

If this is the case, we can have a deal in principle with LA for example, where they select the player we want at 5 - then we complete the deal on July 2nd. But this gets dicey, they are obviously reasons why we'd want to have this done sooner to get in on the UFAs.

And what indication do we have that SJ would trade Clowe or Michalek? If I'm Wilson, there's no way I'm trading Clowe and I remember reading that both him and Mclellan love Michalek. Those are probably 2 players that they want to build around...if we're talking to SJ about Heater, its about Marleau or Thorton...neither of which I want to see in Ottawa...not straight up anyway.

we wouldn't see any indication yet because Heatley just came on the market, SJ might move mountains to get Heatley if they think he can get them anywhere in the playoffs.
