Hopefully BM has a deal in place already and this "leak" doesn't hamper any potential deals.

The Sens need this cap relief if they hope to keep A-Train, so I don't think we will have a dollar for dollar deal past the upcoming season.

Under for 10-11, where the cap could be 50-52 million. There also won't be a bonus cushion as it is the last year of the CBA.
Heatley 7.5
Spezza 7.0
Alfie 4.5
Fisher 4.2
Kelly 2.1
Ruutu 1.3
Kuba 3.7
Phillips 3.5
Leclerc 3.8
Emery buyout .5
TOTAL 38.5 (approx) for 9 players

This leaves 12 million for 11 players, with no A-train or Foligno. Those two will be 6-7 million.

You take away Heatley, you have a lot more flexibility. Look for Murray to ask for one of these types of deals:

1. Including a standout rookie from this season, so that he has salary control until the 11-12 season.
2. Bundling a bad contract (Kelly? Fisher?) in with Heatley.
3. A top 3 pick in this year's draft (Garth Snow, I'm talking to you).

I'm sure we'll have lots of predictions as to trades, but I think Minnesota is looking to make a splash, and they're not happy with Brent Burns right now. Heatley, Lee for Burns, a 1st, ++ could be your deal.

He probably has his staff making a list of their needs and requirements and then indexing a list of players they will target and what they would possibly be looking for in a package deal.

If he doesn't already have all of that indexed, then he isn't doing his job.

Of course he answers up the phone...

😢s of joy. Although our team probably wouldn't look so hot in regards to the 2009-2010 season.

I was going to say, if we do happen to land that 5th over-all pick, and JT, Hedman, Duchene and Kane are gone (as I anticipate will be the case), then Brayden Schenn should absolutely be our pick, regardless of how much flashier MPS is.

If you are going to restructure the team, restructure it with character.

In Brayden Schenn, you not only get a player who should be a (slightly poorer man's version of) Mike Richards or Hank Zetterberg, but you also guarantee that you'll have a leader to build this team around long-term once Alfredsson retires.

MPS is a sick player. But we need character.

Now if there was only some way to get both... :??:

This leak doesn't hurt his trading value. It can only increase the breadth of interest.

Its not like Murray starts talking to teams and they don't ask why he's trying to trade them a player with a NMC... if any team trades for him, they're going to know he's asked for it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this leak originated from Murray himself.

He probably discussed it with a couple teams privately and they lowballed him, so he proceeded to alert everyone else at once.

If I'm right, its a brilliant negotiating tactic: He targets a couple prime contenders for a trade, gauges their interest, gets a couple qualifying offers, then makes it public to drive up the price (or at least get the price to a reasonable level...)

Schenn is more of a Dustin Brown isn't he?? Shrug

Either way, if The Sens somehow lend Schenn we instantly just added character to a team that is seriously lacking it.

Who knows what we add with our 2, 2nd round picks at the draft as well... last year it was Wiercioch... if one of the two turn into anything similar this might be the year we look back on in a few years and say, "that was the turning point".

Not to be a dick, but what the hell is so hard to understand about trading a player with a NMC?

He won't waive to go to NYI.

He is going to have to pick a list of 10-15 teams though no matter what. Murray probably said here are the teams you can choose from, choose 10.

Something along those lines. Heatley isnt in control, that much I'm pretty sure of.

He's gonna want to go to a team that has a chance to win. Just because he has to list 10-15 teams doesn't mean he's going to list 10-15 teams that can actually take him on... He could have Detroit on his list Shrug

Then they wont deal him, it's as simple as that. There has to be teams like LA, St Louis, Edmonton on there because he can say he will only go to these teams, but the fact of the matter is there are only a handful of teams who can take on that salary.

If he's asking for a trade... then he better not have a list of teams... it should be wide open. Any team, any where.

LA: City of arrogant stars = he fits in perfectly

St. Louis: Former home of his hero Brett Hull and home to one of the fastest up-and-coming groups of young players in the league = entirely possible

Edmonton: Close to home, its in the west, also has a decent crop of young players, BUT its Edmonton and Heatley is reported to have been a Flames fan... = unlikely, but possible

Nashville: I have no clue why he would go there...

The Island: Are you kidding me??

Colorado: Do they even have anything to trade with?

etc.

Thats the problem with these things (NTC, NMC) it adds that extra dimension that the trade not only has to work for both teams, but also for the player involved.

Should be, but I mean, if there is a list of 10 teams he wont go to, thats fine. Prob teams like Florida, Atlanta, Pheonix, NYI, Tampa, Carolina, Montreal, Nashville, Toronto, and Buffalo... something like that, everyone else is wide open.

If you ask for a trade that NTC should be void right away.

I agree. I wonder how it's worded in the contract... would love to see one.

The more I think about this the less enviable I think Murray's position is. Not many teams have the budget nor the cap space to take on a massive contract without giving up a big contract in return. The means taking some deadweight back. Also couple that with Heatley's apparent list of teams he won't accept a deal to and the list of suitors potentially gets very small. If I am Murray, I tell Heatley's agent to take that list, turn it sideways and pound it up his Donkey. No way do I allow a player to not only dishonour a contract, but to punch his own ticket? No way.

I'm wondering if Colorado has any interest. I'd be opening with their first and Wolski. He has a year left, then becomes RFA.
