You can believe what you want.  Murray only offered the 1st rounder after alfie left, yes.  Who's to say he wouldn't have made that same deal even after alfie signed on the dotted line?

I don't deny Melnyk has some money issues, but I just don't see it playing out like this where they wouldn't sign the heart and soul of the franchise over a million bucks dispute.

Murray's original plan was to resign Alfie and sign Clarkson.  He had to sign both within the budget.

He traded for Ryan after Alfie was leaving, the money going to him went to Ryan.  Obviously Murray had to pull off something to try and counteract Alfie leaving.  He also got MacArthur.

Good point. Forgot about Clarkson. He wanted alfie and clarkson, and hypothetically if he got alfie signed but not clarkson, then he would have traded for Ryan IMO.

Who knows the true story. I'm just not going to sit around listening to dribble spewed from dbags like yost or senschirp.

Murray would tell you that his target was Clarkson, but I have a feeling that we never put an offer on the table that would have put us in serious consideration. Might've been a PR move more than anything to make it look like we can spend some dough.

Anyway, I am happy with the MacArthur and Ryan additions, and it sure would've been sweet to have Alfie back too.

Too bad Alfie didn't believe in us and didn't want to return. Other than that, yeah it would have been nice to have him back.

I am surprised that Alfie was so quick to leave, uprooting his entire family from Ottawa.

This is a guy that has spent most of 17 years being a good soldier for Ottawa, and he felt like the franchise owed him...or at least owed him market value (for once).  I agree with him.

That said, if it were me, I'd like to think that I would swallow my pride and accept 1 year $4M.

Perhaps Alfie had already planned to move back to Sweden after his career here, which made the choice to leave Ottawa for Detroit easier.

Regardless, I feel that more blame needs to be placed at the feet of Melnyk and his 'budget' as opposed to Alfie.

The guy has been around for 17 years, he knows how negotiations work.
So yeah, lowball or not, how about he thinks of the fans? the city? his teammates?
To me it's simple. it means his ego is more important to him than the love an entire city has given him.
I'm not gonna feel sorry for someone like that. We don't owe him anything, if being paid millions and adored is not enough, I don't know what is.

However, thinking about the "probably not" comments, him taking the puck at the end of the playoffs etc.
I think we need to accept he just wants a cup and doesn't believe in this team.

He does know how negotiations work. He proposed a value, and it was rejected...then we said "what will it take", without providing a counter offer. Apparently, the Senators don't know how negotiations work. We tried to take advantage of his connection to the city, again.

Perfect comment and pretty much echoes what I thought about Alfie. Knee-jerk reaction from a passionate guy. + 1

I don't think any GM accepts the first offer from the player's agent. The agent opens up with a high value, the team counters with a lower value and they eventually agree on something in between. As long as our counter offer wasn't insulting or anything.

The market value for Alfie was set by players like Selanne, Jagr and Whitney.

This is what surprises me. Everyone is so quick to point to melnyk's penny pinching but isn't this how negotiations work? Alfie wanted $6M, Sens wanted $4M. The problem was both played hardball and while the sens softened up at the last hour, alfie's mind was made up already.

Bet if this conversation happened a month ago, he'd still be a senator. Sens took it for granted, and alfie decided on draft weekend that he was coming back. Don't fuck around with each other when you got less than 4 days to negotiate exclusively.

Market value for Alfie is $5.5M. That's what he got on the market.

We offered 20 to 25% less than that, assuming he would take another home team discount.

Yep. We Cussed around, counting on the fact that Alfie was too loyal to the team to actually leave.

Alfie should've said $6M, we should've said $5M (immediately), and then settled on $5.5M.

I'm sure Blum made his way into 3 threads, at least. The Alfie deserves 2.

Explanation of the performance bonus workings. Alfie's bonuses aren't public knowledge yet, but you can be sure that they will be easy enough to achieve.

It thought JPBarry offered 6, Murray countered and then no answer. At least that's what Murray said in his presser.
