2017 Sens Off-Season

$1.1M AAV over two years - I guess I'm ok with that. It's less than they paid Neil, and he can play third line minutes. I don't expect Wingels to be back, or Stalberg either. DiDomenico will start on Belleville of he's still with Ottawa.

So we drop Neil, Kelly, Wingels, Stalberg and bring in White.

Methot for a 2nd and goalie prospect to dallas. Damn, low price.

It seems strange to me that the price was this low for a top-4 defenceman. It was a 2020 2nd rounder and that goalie prospect was just a 7th round pick. So a 2nd rounder in 3 years and a 7th rounder. Good lord.

I don't understand why we couldn't match that.

well speculation was to protect a player for expansion you needed to start with a first round pick. I have a feeling that low of an offer was never an option. no way Mcphee would sell back that low to us

Yep. And after he tried for a 1st + prospect and Dorion said no way, he likely wouldn't have gone back to Ottawa anyway.

He's a slightly crappy GM it appears. LOTS of smoke out of that expansion draft and he drafted one of the worst teams imaginable. Future! Future! Future! Yeah...ok.

It's true. They could have had a pretty decent team especially with the D market as bad as it is. McPhee is really blowing this IMO.

Yeah, he's a fool.

Trading Methot back to Ottawa would have been admitting you screwed up. McPhee first overvalued how much Methot was worth to the Sens,  then how much he was worth on the open market.

It sucks to lose him but this confirms we didn't lose much.

So DC starts today. Anyone planning on going?

If a deferred 2nd rd pick and a goaltending prospect (5th rd?) is the price for Methot, what is the expected return for Phaneuf and his massive cap hit?

Nothing great.

We may be better off with him in the lineup at this point. Rather have Phaneuf than Alzner or Shattenkirk on some ridiculous contract

Shatts isn't coming to Canada. And that prospect in that methot deal was from the 7th round on Friday. A second and a 7th.... it's silly that he didn't try to get dorion to give a better offer.

I have a feeling that Dorion did not re-acquire Methot because he couldn't get rid of Phaneuf. And despite what everyone says, I have a feeling he was trying to deal Phaneuf because there might be some bitterness between both parties. When it became clear he couldn't find a legit trade for Phaneuf, my guess is he told McPhee that sens weren't going to be able to deal for him back.

That's my hunch. Seems too coincidental that Phaneuf was on the block before and after the expansion draft, and Methot got traded to Dallas quite fast

Why would Dorion be trying to trade our 2nd best dman anyway?

Again, my theory is he wants Chabot to start and play in ottawa, but it's too early.

Meh. Phaneuf and dorion are pros. We make a lot more about this than they do.
