Sure, but even you'd agree it's pretty damn close, also considering the amount of posts the guy hit. Could easily be a 30 goal, 60 point guy. For all intents and purposes, he is and the negotiations won't be hinging on a single goal.

Another note, he may have not hit 30 goals but he's been the closest to it since Spezza in 2012 (34 goals).

He's worried that Hoffman's another spezza, in that, a guy you don't go to war with in the playoffs and spend a big dollar amount on to sign. I can see that, but there's a lot of pros too

If hoffman wants spezza $, then he can gtfo. He won't, and within reason he deserves to be paid much more than he is. $5M should be the ceiling on a long term deal.

As for Spezza, watching him in the playoffs this season, there was only one thought in my head: 'where the Diddle was this when he was a senator?' He figured it out under the right coach/system, and no reason to believe Hoffman can't. At this point I wouldn't go to war with bobby ryan either, but what are you going to do?

You need both the Kanes and the Toewses.

Kane's a cup goal winning winger, I don't see any similarities, although I know what you're saying.

Spezza was good in the playoffs with us too, he just doesn't have the extra gear to win. Or at least, he hasn't so far. And no, war with Ryan is not a favourable thought, although I think we all hope he puts it together this year...again. ..

Spezza was a support player and shouldn't have been a leader. He can do alright when there's no pressure from media and when there are bigger names on the team than himself. He did alright when heatly and Alfie were in the spotlight.

Pretty much what we're hoping phaneuf and to a lesser extent ryan can do for us when it's 'go' time.

Both Dorion and Boucher mentioned Hoffman as a key player of the team I think they will resign him.

(Funny how $7M player Bobby Ryan wasn't mentioned in the same sentence)

Ryan is a better player and anyone who thinks otherwise shouldn't be relied upon to give hockey opinions. The team didn't have to mention Ryan, especially when they are asked questions about Hoffman directly that have nothing to do with Ryan. Ryan will score more goals than Hoffman this season, if I had to bet today. He is obviously a huge piece of our team and will be relied upon more than a late blooming one dimensional winger.

Again I wouldn't mind signing Hoffman, but giving him a long term deal is a recipe for disaster. He has a lot of warts and isn't an elite player.

I like Ryan and I think his best seasons as a Senator are ahead.

I like Hoffman. I just see a better player in tarasenko get completely shut down in the conference final and I wonder how Hoffman will do.

Tarasanko still has a lot to learn in terms of playoffs. Dosent mean they are bound by the same restrictions.

Valid point. I guess I'm not at that level of thinking yet since we can't consistently make the playoffs. I'd be happy first and foremost if we can get to the dance more often before I decide Hoffman isn't someone we can win with.

We basically have to decide this summer if we want Hoffy here long term or not. Me, I'd trade him, but I certainly see why Dorion would be reluctant to do so.

Hoffman is one dimensional. He scores goals. Which is a great dimension to have. But for us to pay him big money he needs to show that he's more than that. Ryan on the other hand isn't a complete player or as good a goal scorer (right now) but he brings lot more to the table which somewhat justifies his money.

The Sens have to assess if Hoffman can do and be more.

It all depends on the return. I'm not a huge fan of Hoffman, but he can be a game changer with his speed and shot. Couple that with the coach he's familiar with and like and he could easily improve on last season's numbers.

I also am quite nervous about trading one of our only sniper forwards. Can we do it by committee? Depends on exactly who's brought in to replace Hoffman if he goes. Are we bringing in a cheap third liner hoping he'll be able to produce 20ish goals, or are we bringing it a legitimate top line forward? If it's option B and it's Eriksson + third liner, then I'd be okay moving Hoffman, if it's not then we're really not making ourselves better.

I maintain that he can't have a NTC, at least not a full one, so if we want to move him in a couple of years, it really shouldn't be difficult. Sign him, 5 years, 4.75 per year, 23.75 million decently spend with an option to trade down the road if need be.

I wish General Fanager would let us see the 16/17 cap hits for teams instead of defaulting to 15/16, unless I'm missing a filter on it.

Teams that appear in deep Dung:

Tampa Bay, Columbus, LA, perhaps St.Louis, always Chicago, always the Rangers (with Diddle all to show), Montreal's not looking great either.

Look to snag a solid forward off one of these guys, because we all know no one's taking Dustin Brown, David lol Clarkson etc. They'll have to dump cap at some point and someone's gonna panic.

I don't think Tampa will be in too much trouble if Stamkos leaves. But yeah, we've heard for years about how our "cap space" is such a "great asset"...so it'd be cool to eventually cash in on that.
