yeah, because we didn't know how to manage the cap properly. In this day and age, you have an army of people to tell you where to cut some money. Diddle, I would have traded a ton of people before I let Chara walk and I would have made better decisions way before I traded Hossa.

The only hindsight is we didn't get creative IMO.

Funny, but as I recall Heatley's contract *was* lower -- at the time.

Heatley was a DB, for sure, and screwed the Sens in a big way by refusing a good trade while holding out for that $4M bonus. But fact of the matter is he was great until that shoulder injury in Detroit, I believe, and he wasn't a bad team mate until he got all pissy at Clouston.

If he didn't get injured and if Bryan continue behind the bench (which means Muckler didn't get fired -- which probably would have happened if he had gone with Chara and not Redden, or even both) ... lotta ifs.

The cap was like 35M at the time. Try to fit the pizza line + Redden and Chara in that lol.

I didn't disagree about the Hossa trade at the time. And still don't, given what we knew at the time. The impression I had was that Hossa put himself above the team by demanding more. Maybe he's a great teammate now, maybe he matured since then, but at the time I definitely felt a slight betrayal. We were getting an (arguably) better player for less money *and* sending a message to the rest about being selfish.

Of course it may have backfired because The Big Slovakian was really good friends with the Not-So-Big Slovakian.

Which reminds me, Turris and Wiercioch are best friends. Move one and the other may be affected.

Boston did it. With Bergeron and Krejci and whoever the hell else they had on their team. By the time Chara signed that deal in the summer, the cap had gone up IIRC.

I'd trade Chiasson and Puempel for Eriksson personally. Trying to figure out his worth, but if it's not a lot more than that, it might be a good fit.
