Just make the disconnect. I can't say I read the books but I don't know why it would change anything.
Look at the walking dead the series has gone on a complete different path than the books(which I read) and for the most part it's better that way. The series no longer has to live up to the books and vice versa. The same could apply for GOT. If they can veer away enough from the books you will be able to enjoy two different things as they will no longer be related enough to compare.
That kinda makes sense only because the books aren't finished.
Imagine if they had taken LotR and diverged completely after Two Towers. Thing here is that the TV show has caught up to the end of the books in some story lines. I think GRRM himself has said (or at least implied) that he might see which way the TV show goes when he finally gets to book 7.
