I actually think that's the key to Conacher being able to find consistency in both zones.
He just doesn't have it, old friend. It's ok to admit it now.
He might not - with this franchise, but I don't think I'd completely count him out.
Right now the issues with Ottawa are clear:
Michalek has just found his legs in the last ~20 games and appears to be a top six winger again, so that's a huge plus, Ryan is a legitimate top 6 forward obviously, ditto MacArthur, but then there's a tremendous drop off.
Conacher is taking up a spot that could be used on either another prospect from Bingo, or ideally someone acquired to come in and help spread out the scoring a bit.
So...we need an upgrade on Conacher - like...now.
Spezza is still a top-six forward given his production. Problem is we are trying to get 4 lines to play the 200' game and contribute on offense and we just don't have that. From practice:
MacArthur-Turris-Condra
Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Hoffman-Ziba-Ryan
Conacher-Smith-Neil
Get Condra and Greening out of the top-six and replace them with Zibanejad and Ryan -- yes, that means Zibanejad doesn't get to take a lot of faceoffs, but he can still do everything else a top-2 center needs to do. That would give us two good scoring lines.
Right now we are spreading things too thin IMO.
But what do I know, I'm not a fisherman from down East.
