So Notch told me that it meant absolutely nothing that Borowiecki, Blood, and Sdao were named by Murray as the top D at prospect camp since they are older and bigger. Apparently they should be or they are busts, even though they are all late picks...discuss.

That has to be the dumbest reasoning I've ever heard.

The exchange:

Big Ev: Sens Assistant GM Tim Murray said that defensemen Mark Borowiecki, Ben Blood, Michael Sdao, winger Stefan Noesen, and goalie Robin Lehner were the most impressive players at development camp.

Sdao will be in college one more year and Blood will be beginning his pro career this season. Sdao is the more offensive d-man, whereas Blood is a mean mother****er.

Notch: They better be the most impressive. Everyone, with the exception of Noesen, is as old as dirt when it comes to taking part in development camps.

Blood was drafted in 2007 for the love of God! Borowiecki in 2008. Pretty much, every other D-man in camp was at least 3-5 years younger (and 35-50lbs lighter) than Blood. Guess who the next oldest Dman was? You got it, Sdao (drafted in 2009) whom you also mentioned. Everyone else was either drafted in 2010, 11, 12 or undrafted.

Lehner, good for him for showing up and working hard, but really? Development camp?

Just didn't want people to take too much from your post, a huge grain of salt is needed.

Noesen is the guy I will continue to give props to. He is the steal of the 2011 draft.

Big Ev: All three d-men were late round picks. Just because they are older doesn't mean they would be the most impressive. Sdao had a bit of a coming out party. Blood hasn't become a professional yet. They are all good signs. if the GM/AGM is commenting on these players, it's a good thing.

And Lehner showing up and working hard at development camp is a huge positive, which the organization really loves. Don't underestimate that at all. He's showing that he is serious about his career and gunning for a spot.

Notch: If you don't equate being 3-5 years older as a defenceman as an asset when it comes to judging talent on an equal basis, we are done here. I expected the players mentioned to be the best; if they weren't mentioned as such, there is the issue.

Lehner, well, we just said the same thing. Good for him for recognizing the need to show up and be himself, even though his skill level is beyond a development camp at this point. Maturity-wise he needed to be there and he was.

Taking nothing away from your original post, I just didn't want people to get too excited over uncles playing better than their nephews.

Let's just call it a super-coincidence that the oldest, heaviest, most mature, meanest and hardest working defencemen put on the best show at Development camp.

I'm shocked. Haha.

Big Ev: That's exactly why they stood out in camp, and that's a good thing. They set examples for others. They are proving that they have developed well and are ready for new challenges. Go ask Tim Murray if it doesn't mean anything.

I can see his point about them being older and heavier and more experienced, I guess.

I also agree that to an extent he has a point that you expect that the older guys, who are likely more physically and mentally mature, and also more experienced, ought to be the better players. They also have a lot more to prove, since they are nearing that time where they either make it or not. Guys who are still eligible for CHL still have some time before they have to make the jump.

It's not a good argument though about correlating older players and late picks as busts if they don't make it.

Most of these guys aren't even ready to commit to pro hockey. Boroweicki left school early to go pro, and has only a little over a full season in thew AHL.

Lehner aslo told me he was only there at camp as he volunteered to be. That shows he is willing to put extra time and effort in, not only for his development, but others. He is there to learn and to mentor too. Don't think Brassard and the other guy don't look up to him, cause they should. He's got a Calder cup and MVP to his name already.

Notch is probably the biggest idiot going. The guy pretends to know wtf he is talking about and he really doesn't... no clue really. Just talks out of his Donkey.

Yah, older guys are more physically mature, shocker. That's also why they are closer to the NHL. That's why younger players are compared to them because you can tell how close a younger player is to making the next step or not.

It's like saying a 18 year old kid looks more impressive in the OHL than a 16 year old... of course he does. Means he's closer to the NHL.

Older guys are closer to the NHL because they are older and more physically mature. Thanks tips. This should be held against them because...?

Yah...? Like every other single walk of life people who have more experience and more maturity are more ready to be a manager, CEO, supervisor, captain, general, w/e the hell else? Shocking.

Players who have developed more are more ready. This is a fault by his account? Interesting. Hopefully he punched himself in the face after.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing, but figured it was pretty obvious.

Sdao has earned the respect and attention of the Sens organization by working his tail off and by coming into DC and being better than anyone else. Sometimes age and experience is a consideration I guess, but in this case, this is just a kid who is developing very well.

I was also gonna say that he should get used to older prospects as teams like to let guys finish their University or College unless they're an elite prospect.

A college kid coming in after 4 years of university is way more ready than a 19 year old kid playing junior unless that kid is unbelievable. Development is a good thing and most players take time. Aside from the upper tier kids in the first round very few players ever make it before they are 22, 23.

How long did it take JOB to become an NHLer? Greening? Smith? Yah, years.

Its annoying because he is well respected by Dobber and co. I called him out once but was ripped apart because he has been going through some things, apparently. Doesn't explain why you have to act like a Richard on another board and use multiple aliases.
