Yes, they should have drafted Hamilton.

No what they should have done is play McElhinney more. The drop off IMO was after the top 4.

Hard to replace Cowen's minutes from the penalty box.

Mind you Lundin, Boroweicki is a decent bottom pairing on paper, maybe it works. I guess Methot would replace Cowen in theory.

I prefer what happened. I felt as if we finally cut some stagnant pieces and replaced them with a whole bunch of great, young players.

I like what I've seen of Zibanejad this year, so no offense to the pick, but I've always wondered what Hamilton and Cowen would be like.

A lot of unrealized potential yet for both players. Let things play out for crying out loud.

Seriously. It's amazing how people make judgements and use hindsight with 19 year old kids. Imagine if life was like that, haha, WOW, I would be unemployed for life.

In no way shape or form have I said their fate were sealed though Smile

The more I think about it, the more I think Zibanejad can be an ELITE 3rd line C. And in this game we all know how important it is to have that kind of powerful depth come playoff time.

Oxymoron right there. No such thing. Basically, what people are lowering their expectations to is Mike Fisher... they are the exact same player IMO but we'll see if they turn Zibanejad into a winger like they should have done with Fisher.

I dunno if you can say it's an oxymoron. I know what you mean, but this league turned into a 'top 9' league a couple of years ago - wherein you better have an excellent, productive 3rd line to support your top 6 - and I think Zibanejad might be the cream of the crop for that. Not that I'm saying that's his plateau, but it could end up being his lot in the NHL.

If he's a 3rd liner, than he's an average player, or a "specialist" type player (big hitter, faceoff guy, PK specialist), whatever...and those are the types of guys you can get any year via free agency.

We didn't draft ZBad because we projected him as a 3rd liner. It's too early to tell what he'll be, but what we do know is that he needs more time in the AHL.

Just remember that a 3rd liner could be like a Jordan Staal who is only on the third line (well not anymore, obviously) because there's 2 better C's in front of him.

Ok, yes, I remember that there was one team in the league who had two all-star centres, so a third good centre had to play on the third line.

That is obviously the exception to the rule, and not what we were discussing.

Turris isn't Malkin nor is Spezza, Crosby.

The point was the Spezza and Turris are better, not hat they are Crosby and Malkin. So if Z happened to be a good 3rd line C on the team then I wouldn't complain. If he was a third line C even though Turris busted and got dealt or something, for example, then that wouldn't be good.

They want him to be a top 6, if he tops out as a 3rd line center then they probably could have done better at the draft. Not saying he will but it wouldn't shock me if that's exactly where he ended up.

I wouldn't put him ahead of Da Costa right now either if you are talking about Ottawa centers. They need to turn him into a winger or Da Costa into one.

OR trade Spezza, since he's a bum anyways!

Is Chris Kelly who I consider a pretty good 3rd line center capable of laser one-timers or quick backhander tape to tape passes on a breakaway? (I've seen this a couple times in Bingo this year from Zibanejad)
On the other hand, Kelly has a pretty good hockey sense which IMO is better than Zibby's at this point.

They need to develop him into a power forward... it takes time and maturity to be a player like that. He may not be a full time NHLer (at least an effective top 6) until he is 22, 23.
