I'm tired of us being a middle of the road team, it's time to do something that looks like an improvement-you can't tell me there are not other GM's out there that would be willing to deal with half the season over.
NO ONE thought we were a CUP contender this year. Absolutely no one. And if they did, they were off their meds. No way in hell would anyone think that. General consensus was that we'd duke it out for one of the bottom spots in the East.

Of course, every GM's job is to work towards building a Cup contender. No question. But, in this new cap era, you can't do that overnight like you used to.

Have you seen how many trades the teams behind us in the standings have done? Yeah, a TON! GAME DAY: Ottawa Senators @ Atlanta Thrashers - 7:00pm ET - Tue. Jan. 12th, 2010 - Page 38 270956 GAME DAY: Ottawa Senators @ Atlanta Thrashers - 7:00pm ET - Tue. Jan. 12th, 2010 - Page 38 489887

It's easy to say, "we need to make a trade". Who do you trade and for what? You want Murray to trade our future prospects on players so right now we're not a middle of the road team? Or do you want to trade away Alfie, Spezza, Volchenkov, Philips to make us a better team.

I'm all ears to hear this magical trade solution that will turn us into a playoff contender.

Lets see how many "teams behind us" there are at the end of this road trip.

When alfie and spezza went out for a month each Murray should have been on the phone.

I don't want Murray gone for the record, I just think there are options available.

There will be trades over the next week, we should be involved.

Watch and see.

BTW how many of those teams have lost their entire top line, and #1 defenseman?

It took Philly wins in 8 of 10 games coupled with our biggest slide of the season for them to push ahead of us in the standings by one point. And that was a team that was supposed to contend for the conference and the Stanley Cup while we were supposed to languish in the cellar of the Eastern conference with the other inept franchises of our side of the North Americas.

Meanwhile, we have five of our best players out with various injuries.

You know, I'd love to see where the Penguins would be if Crosby, Gonchar, Malkin, Guerin and whoever the Diddle else all got injured at the same time.

Diddle it. Apply that logic to any team. No one is immune to that many injuries. Least of all a team that would be battling for a playoff spot even with a healthy lineup.

People need to be realistic with their expectations.

"Our GM needs to do something about it!!"

This isn't like fixing a broken car. You don't just take it to a garage, pay someone to fix it and pick it up in three days.

This is far more complex. So the insinuations of some particularly petulant people on these forums that there should be widespread blame laid around the organization because a team missing an entire top line's worth of talent as well as two other important pieces is faltering during a five game road trip.

Get a Diddling clue is what those of us who have one say.

Detroit is getting killed by injury as well... and they are sitting in 9th in the West. No one can take a hit like we have and expect to continue winning let alone holding our spot.

This is exactly the problem, people say "don't trade our future prospects", and I agree to some point BUT, don't say future prospects (guys that will develop in the next 3-5 years) and then act as if alfie who is 36, phillips who is 31, will be around and productive at that time. You can't have it both ways-you go for it now with alfie, kovalev, neil, rutuu, kuba, and phillips, (all over 30) or you trade for youth, to develop with your emerging prospects-karlsson, cowen, spezza, michalek, fisher, foligno, shannon, volchenkov, brodeur, leclaire, etc.

Hockey is cyclical, and if you don't make changes, nothing changes....

When you look at those options and names, I know what I would do. I don't want to trade the future I want to build it.

How about something like

To Calgary

phillips
cheechoo
3rd round pick

To Ottawa
Phaneuf

Can you imagine the excitement, can you imagine our defence in three years

The problem is it's really hard to make a trade of that magnitude. Number one, Cheechoo is a negative value - and I mean that - if you add him into a package, you have to add a 2nd rounder for someone to accept him. Phillips has a NTC and is a shutdown guy, so he's really redundant with Regher there. And the 3rd is insulting considering Phaneuf is a young, talented D-man.

For Phaneuf it's Spezza or Michalek straight up. MAYBE a Foligno, Regin, 1st package would do it, but that's also debatable.

I still say it would be Spezza and Volchenkov for Phaneuf and Jokinen.

C for C, D for D, expiring contract for expiring contract.

Would you do that deal though?
