Could be that tagging rule we keep hearing about...we are quite close to the cap this year and I believe next year isn't going to be any different.

We need to shed a few million dollars in salary this summer (Cheechoo).

We need to be realistic (Kelly).

Buy out Cheechoo and we save 2 million right off the bat though.

And...I've kinda grown to like Kelly this year. I swear I have, I like him for 2.2 million even. Can you imagine?

It's hard not to like a guy with that much good press.

Yeah, like I read and listen to Don Brennan or Lever Sage or any of the Ottawa media.

Kelly has been quite good lately. Thank goodness for that. He looks like somewhat of a sniper.

He seems to really thrive when Spezza is out of the lineup. He's worth the 2.2 right now. I never thought I'd say that.

I'm guessing so. CBJ traded Leclaire to us last year when he was on the IR, right?

If you're referring to Spezza: god, I hope so.

I was just thinking why the Diddle Spezza wouldn't be on LTIR. Then I was wondering if it might be because you can't trade a player on LTIR...

Yeah, I'm not clear as to why guys like Spezza and Alfie don't qualify for LTIR. In any event, tho', LTIR just allows you to spend a certain amount over the cap during that period -- you don't get more cap space, really.

I think Murray is keeping his options open. SensChirp: Sens interested in Hamhuis and Brunette? - Page 8 159628

LTIR carries a minimum amount of time off required... I guess there's always hope that they come back sooner than expected.

LTIR is so technical. The combined salary of the injured player and the replacement player can't exceed a certain limit of the team's designated injury "pool" or something to that effect.

I think the reason is that even if a player is on LTIR, the team still has to pay both his salary and his replacement's salary. The injured reserve status as rooney pointed out only allows the team to spend a certain amount of money on replacement players.

It's only 7 days, you can activate a player off of IR after the 8th day post-date of injury.

Any reports from the Wild or Preds practices today? Missing players? Spezza?

You're so persistent on this, and yet usually so sarcastic at the same time, so I'm not sure what to think of these posts here -- but let me assure you again that the Wild is not trading Brunette. Hamhuis is another story -- if he won't sign, he'll be moved -- but I'm not sure we have what it takes to land him. I'm not sure he's what we need, either, unless we know that we're not bringing Volchenkov back.

As far as I understand, you can place a player on LTIR and then turn around and spend over the cap up to that player's salary while he is on LTIR. The problem arises when said player returns and you've got to make room for that player's cap hit. I'm sure there's a whole lot more to it, but that's the gist of it from what I understand. The Sabres have done this with Connolly's salary in years past I do know that.

Doesn't a player on LTIR get his salary from insurance rather than the club itself?

Yes, but I believe there needs to be full disclosure and I would assume that the acquiring team should have access to medical records an such.

I remember Daigle being traded, and a day later seeing a picture of Pat Falloon and Vinny Prospal coming through the airport. Falloon was carrying both sets of bags because Vinny was on crutches, recovering from a broken leg (I think).
