wprager wrote:Their worst-ever winless start was 0-6-1 to start the 1990-91 season. They would have to lose tonight against the Avalanche and Saturday night against the Rangers in order to match that start. If they do, it doesn't get any easier as they go on a 5 game road trip through Vancouver, Anaheim, Dallas, Buffalo and Montreal. And what's with the schedule? After tonight's game they only play one game in the next 10 nights. Yikes!
The 0-6-1 start was a TIE... not an OTL... so, in theory, THIS is the worst start.

Under 10 remaining, 3 goals down. It ain't happening tonight.

People seemed surprised by this? They suck, they have always sucked, they brought in unproven guys expecting them to lead the team and they have not done anything of the sort.

Put God in nets, he wont stop the puck with that team in from of him either.

Does Burke really believe this team is a contender ? I don't get him at all.

He was on OTR with Landsberg a while back proclaiming on how there is "more than 1 way to build a team" (implying draft picks aren't needed).

It's gonna be hard to build a team when he doesn't have a Diddling job.

In a way, this is kind of satisfying. We ALL knew all along that this guy had simply been riding the coattails of other GMs who had setup his teams in foolproof ways before he took over. This just goes to reinforce that notion.

Although I understand, I love TSN's analysis on the front page. Basically: "Ron Wilson benched two of his top scorers and started the third strong goalie and somehow the Leafs still lost."

So, any guesses on what the top-5 of the 2009 draft is going to look like?

My guess at this point:

1. Hall, NYI
2. Seguin, Minnesota
3. Fowler, Boston
4. Kabanov, Phoenix
5. Granlund, Florida

All season IMO. American coach, American GM, American D-man, American forward. Team USA is basically based out of Toronto. He won't be fired until after the Olympics. So next summer - if he's fired - and I doubt that personally.

Wow... how bad can it get? Who knows now... but they'll have a LOT of time to think about it with only 2 games in the next 11 days. Not sure if that will help or hurt their situation. It really can't get any worse. They are getting no bounces... no nothing.

Next up for the Leafs is the Rangers on Saturday and then they kick off a road trip in Vancouver the following Saturday that sees them play 5 games away from home.

Being away from home may be what they need.

they have two very difficult games coming up though, the Rangers absolutely decimated them at MSG, don't see a lot of evidence showing that the Rangers won't do that again. Vancouver has things going good for them as well and a team that doesn't have a lot of scoring talent shouldn't bother Luongo much either, at first thought, that should be two more losses right there, but nothing is guaranteed so that's why they play the games.

I was pretty sure they'd get the win last night. Playing desperate usually gets you a win eventually, but I don't think they're even playing desperate. They just look totally lost and confused.

I wonder if not having a captain/leader is making things worse? Who is stepping up in the locker room and rallying the troops?

Toskala's out for two weeks, Gustavsson is out for who knows how long... it's going to be the Joe MacDonald show for a bit.

well looking around their locker room it's hard to speculate who would do that, Kaberle is the longest serving Leaf, but he doesn't appear to be the vocal type that will rip the guys into a frenzy. Komisarek and Beauchemin might be looked towards for leadership, but they are the new guys and won't be thrusted into that role easily. I bet this team is really missing Sundin now, they were still losing some, but at least the team had direction. It's like everything Wilson is saying just doesn't sink in or he has lost the room and they are blocking him out, I really don't know for sure.

I think they most certainly are missing a "Sundin" in the room. It's situations like this where you need someone to rally the troops and get the team in gear. Everything Wilson has tried has had no effect. If they get a win... it will probably be a fluke.

I wonder how Kessel is taking all this. Watching his team flounder and then realizing that the pressure will be on him to "save" the team when he finally laces up? Not a great situation to be coming in to. Especially with the supporting cast he'll have.
