I feel embarrassed for picking them to be fighting for 8th. So far, so bad.
The team was only good because of Brian Burke arrogantly proclaiming it was and everyone seems to have bought it.
Their free agent good squad defence is a joke right now.
A goalie who has played only 1 NHL game is their savior.
Their forwards are only slightly above AHL quality IMO, and then there's Phil Kessel who better be the next Gretzky if those draft picks were worth it.
I don't know how that team is supposed to be a shoe-in for the playoffs but the Sens aren't.
At the time, the Leafs had scored a tonne of goals, but couldn't keep them out to save their lives. So Burke brought in Komisarek, Beauchemin (real solid, but has looked like crap this year), traded Kubina for Execlby (BIG mistake), kept Kaberle and still has VanRyn and Finger (unfortunately). But that's a pretty massive upgrade from last year's D.
Then Toskala had major off-season surgery and that was supposed to cure him of his problems (remember how good he's been in the past) and he signed Bozak, Hansen, Stalberg to add in to the already better than average offense.
And then he signed the top rated goalie not in the NHL. So Robin Lehner, but 2 years more experience and good in key, pressure-filled situations. So, in short, while he didn't fix his forwards yet, he kept the status quo up front and added some heavy players on the back end, while solidifying his goaltending.
The Kessel trade was a little silly. If he was so gung ho, he should have went the extra mile to get Cammelleri or someone of that ilk. 2 firsts and a 2nd could probably get you some powerful players on the open market - perhaps players that have proved a little more than Kessel.
All in all, it should have worked, but so far...wow...
