I may have been. As soon as I heard his voice and his nonchalant BS about wanting to get out of Ottawa, I was deeply pissed (and hurt) all over again.

I wouldn't go that far. We still stand to get a good return and can sit and wait. The worst hasn't hit Mr. Heatley yet. If he thinks Brennan's question was direct, wait until WE (the fans) have our say. You want out of town? We'll run you straight out of town, you ego hungry ar$hole!

I only heard a bit of the press conference. Brennan would have done much better to simply ask his question, which was a great question. Unfortunately, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to get some of the spotlight. I did chuckle though when he dropped the line about phone calls.

I will say one thing for Heatley. I think he was honest. The reason he wants out is self-centered and lame, but at least he spit out the fact that he is unhappy with his role. I think we would all agree that paying 7.5 million for someone who will not play max minutes in all situations, like Alfie, is a waste of money.

This is why I have always been in favour of getting rid of Heatley, and not caring that much about what the team gets back. The circus of this press conference will be passed on to the entire roster once training camp starts, and likely would not let up for some time.

Reading between the lines of what I heard, Heatley wants to go to a US market where hockey is the 1A game in town. Not Ottawa or Edmonton where hockey is #1, or Atlanta, where hockey is behind baseball, football, basketball, darts, NASCAR, etc. He wants to hear the adoration of a sold-out crowd, but be able to walk around and not get recognized too much. I think it would hurt his ego if he didn't get recognized at all. Face it, Heatley is a star who is acting like a diva.

I still say to make Heatley play nets in training camp and let Neil and Bass practice breakaways on him.

Since I first posted about Cheechoo I've been thinking about it. Since Murray is really handcuffed now, a Chechoo/Erhoff/prospects deal is pretty damn good. This is coming from someone who's been vocal about not wanting Cheechoo to, so bare with me:

Heatley, despite his words, displays a poor work ethic, which is probably why he was demoted in the first place. Cheechoo on the other hand, reportedly has an excellent work ethic. Cheechoo has slipped all the way to the 3rd line in SJ, and could never find his way back, mostly because of the depth of the Sharks. Coming to Ottawa, he'd have a top six role if he's willing to work for it. Remember, this is a guy who potted 56 goals with a big playmaking centre (we have one of those don't we?), something that Heatley has NEVER done. Even if we could get Cheechoo back to 80% of that 56 goal season, that's 44 goals by my math. In other words, 5 more than Heatley had last season, for half the cost. If that's the case, factoring in Erhoff+, we are a more balanced team. Right now, Cheechoo looks like the anti-Heatley to me. We may not find a better deal, so let's do this.

LOL. Today, a bunch of you go your wish. Was it everything you hoped for?

Hate to pull a N4L, but... can I say "told you so" yet? I knew no one would like him one shred better for opening his mouth, and that the general perception would be that he's only hurt his own value and further hampered the team's efforts to move him.

Anywan, I took two things out of today:

1) Heatley was surprising calm, unemotional, even seemingly honest. I thought he actually came off well, to be honest, but I haven't been stabbing a miniature Heatley doll all summer long, either, like some people.

2) The Sens are going to do everything to get this guy off of their team before training camp. I say that because Heatley was so unapologetic about, so steadfast in his decision. I went into today thinking there was a 60/40 chance that Heatley would be traded before the season started. I left that interview thinking that figure jumped to about 80/20.

Careful what you wish for, eh, guys? Smile

First home game, Danny sets up in his traditional office and snipes a beautiful shot over DiPietro's shoulder. Suddenly there is total silence in the crowd. No "The Heat is on" music playing, no one cheering. Just total slience. Stu announces the goal, puck is dropped and then the crowd gets engaged again.

That would be totally awesome and send a huge message.

Honestly I don't think Heatley would give a Dung, people who only care about themselves are like that.

Wow he really that self-centered.

He's felt this way for a long time but had no problems signing that huge contract. He got the A but didn't step it up. Says he's a good teammate but has selfish reasons for wanting out.

No wonder he didn't return Alfie's calls, he wants the C.

We need him out of here ASAP, we'll never win with such a diva on the team.

But does doing everything equate to letting other teams fleece us because they know we're up against a brick wall?

At some point, Murray is going to have to decide if it's better to take a lesser offer and just get Heatley outta here in order to prevent any further damage he could do in the room if he remains a Senator.

That's a tough decision.

I didn't get a chance to listen in but from reading it on the citizen blog, I thought Heatley came off quite well.  Of course it's hard to tell from just reading.  My stance doesn't change though.  I still have no problem with anything that Heatley has done other than why he's asked for a trade.  Even that, is not such a big deal, it's just more than enough reason for me to think we need to trade the guy.

but hemmy is right we may not want cheechoo but i would rather have a player at 3M work his donkey off every night and score 25-30 goals(which is more than reasonable if he plays on the top two lines with kovalev or spez) then this prima donna who wants what he wants and gets the A then doesnt put the effort in for even 50 games

No, I don't think he's waited this long just to get fleeced. At the same time, tho', he may well have to settle for the kind of offer EDM made, tho' -- one good, desirable young player; one burden; one good prospect.

We are not going to get full value no matter what, now; that's been true since the day the news leaked, although I confess I didn't see it that way at the time.

I honestly don't get why people think this was bad. He spoke, reiterated his request, stated he would come to camp in Ottawa and give it his all.

How does this put Murray in a worse situation than before today ? All summer there had been talk of Heatley not reporting to camp. Now Murray can just tell other GMs that he doesn't "NEED" to trade Heatley.

One point that will need to be clarified by the League and NHLPA should Heatley stay in Ottawa this season revolves around the written trade request and teams he would waive for. Is this a legal document stating that Heatley has waived his NMC to those teams, and if so, is there a time limit on the list. In other words has Heatley essentially changed his NMC to a limited NMC for the duration of his contract ?
