We acquire nothing elite, we get worse short-term and don't improve long-term nearly as much as we should be.

This was a chance to really put our team in a good direction, I think we blew it.

If you assume Fisher, Penner and Cogliano rebound and put up 25 each (not too much of a stretch and a definite possibility) then add Foligno and Shannon putting up 16-20 goals each, with Spezza and Alfie put up 30+, with Winchester, Ruutu, Bass, and whoever putting up 5 each, then our forward core will have some solid balance and some decent output.

Actually he's not...

He may just be the best defensive defense prospect in our system. He clearly Imo hasn't proven to be a true NHL regular and may very well spend a significant portion of this season in Binghamton. You're right that we don't need him in Ottawa (ESPECIALLY with Smith still in town) but if he's given some time to round his game out in the AHL with some proper expectations on him, then we may have found a decent replacement for Phillips, at some point.

Again, I'm not stoked on him, but it is further depth.

Frank! Penner had one off-year...in Edmonton of all places. Watch when he scores 30+ goals this season. Mark it down, because it's going to happen.

The pieces are there. I like the size of FPenner, I love the speed of Cogs, Smid I'm indifferent to, but the two wingers that we add might help balance things out.

My thinking was that Cowen wouldn't be Phillipsed into being nothing more than a defensive defenseman and they would nurture him along to make him more of an all-around threat ala Pronger

He had one good year is more accurate. Playing with Getzlaf and Perry, of all players.

Even when he put up 23 goals in Edmonton, he was trashed by the fans for his passionless, one-dimensional play.

Heatley does that as well, but he puts up 50 goals.

Even this bad season, he had more goals than Cogliano had points.

Cowen may very well become a two-way defender, but he'll still be better defensively than Smid.

The only result of his size is that he's more noticeably awful.

Penner might rebound if he's paired with Spezza.

Heatley put up 40 goals and 90 points in his second season with no one.

i think that everyone mentioned penner would probably have to be gotten from an edmonton deal.
