Heatley puts up 50 with Spezza, not Hemsky

Heatley put up 40 goals and 90 points in his second season with no one.

He might not actually. He knew Penner was coming. I'll give him that.

i think that everyone mentioned penner would probably have to be gotten from an edmonton deal.

Yes. Not enough whining going on over something that hasn't even happened yet.

Fat Penner, sure, but only if he's the salary dump to two really solid players. Cogliano is solid, Smid is sickeningly redundant.

Actually he's not...

He may just be the best defensive defense prospect in our system. He clearly Imo hasn't proven to be a true NHL regular and may very well spend a significant portion of this season in Binghamton. You're right that we don't need him in Ottawa (ESPECIALLY with Smith still in town) but if he's given some time to round his game out in the AHL with some proper expectations on him, then we may have found a decent replacement for Phillips, at some point.

Again, I'm not stoked on him, but it is further depth.

No, that'd be Jared Cowen by a mile.

My thinking was that Cowen wouldn't be Phillipsed into being nothing more than a defensive defenseman and they would nurture him along to make him more of an all-around threat ala Pronger Shrug

Cowen may very well become a two-way defender, but he'll still be better defensively than Smid.
Give him a chance. He was also drafted 9th overall you know.

Too many ifs. There are too many ifs to this deal.

If Cogliano can become a reliable top-6 player, if Smid can realize any of his potential, if Penner can stop being so useless.

You don't think the Oilers have tried to get something out of Penner? They've tried damn hard, and they've given up.

If Murray looked at this deal and thought Penner was a positive aspect of it, I have thus far over-rated him as a General Manager.

:^^^^: Oh man I can't wait to see his reaction!

He's either going to be really even and reasonable :??:

OR he's going to flip the Diddle out Ahhhhh!

depending how many beers are still in him when he reaches the keyboard. still i'd go for flipping reasonable....

i did think that we'd get eberle instead of snid

Draft order means less to me than what I see from the player.

Despite what you all think WHEN WHiney Heatley waives, we are a better team by far.

He had one good year is more accurate. Playing with Getzlaf and Perry, of all players.

Even when he put up 23 goals in Edmonton, he was trashed by the fans for his passionless, one-dimensional play.

Heatley does that as well, but he puts up 50 goals.

Even this bad season, he had more goals than Cogliano had points.
You mean the way Heatley was thrashed here for his lazy play?

Thats not really my point. Smid could turn out to be Regehr 2.0....or he could be trash Shrug I'm definitely not trying to sell his merits in this trade, but I am trying to reason them.

I know some of the Bingo boys are decent defenders, but Smid is probably a step ahead. There's a significant gap between Phillips, Volchenkov and Gryba, Waugh. What this does is help to fill that gap (along with Cowen...not in spite of him)

:^^^^: Apologies, but I'm pretty upset.

I was last this upset at the Lapointe deal/the non-acquisition of Stuart, and I was right that time.

Albeit, less so on the Campoli deal, which I didn't like either.

Yes, as I said. But at least in his laziness he produced. Penner doesn't produce on remotely the same level.

Yeah and Heatley was drafted 2nd overall whereas Penner was undrafted...

Penner is clearly not Heatley, which is why he is part of a package for him.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you seem like a very pessimistic person. Someone who isn't too happy ever. There's far too many Sens fans out there who all they do is whine and complain. Let's at least see what they do here.

Muray has built our cupboards up pretty quickly and efficiently as of late.

Some other perspectives:
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Scott-Pattison/Dont-go-west-young-Dan/111/21886
Smid, Penner and Cogliano for malcontent goal scorer, Dany Heatley. A ransom for a player who, let's be frank, has left a negative mark on two franchises.

Smid, Penner and a draft pick, first or second, should get this deal done. Throwing a player busting with talent like Andrew Cogliano into the mix is completely over the top.

Since the draft, a well-placed source of mine has maintained that Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has been working hard to attract a pair of major offensive players. It's no secret Heatley is one of them. That said, if by moving the speedy Cogliano, who seemingly would be united with Spezza in Ottawa, Tambo is clearing up cap space to land another offensive piece to the team's retool, then we'll just have to reserve judgement until the dust settles.

If, however, Heatley agrees to head west thus costing Edmonton Cogliano, Smidder, Penz and a $4M bonus as of midnight, then, on paper, Murray wins this trade and his team has taken a huge step back towards respectabiility.

Stay tuned Oilers faithful!

hockeyleaks.com
Sources tell Hockeyleaks.com that the Oilers are moving in on a deal to acquire Dany Heatley.

*Note: while writing this blog, TSN has also posted the same rumour.

The deal would send Heatley and his large contract to the Oilers for Dustin Penner, Ladislav Smid and Andrew Cogliano.

Great move for the Sens, who badly need this youth injection into their system.

He's allowed to say that, but it's ridiculous. It's like me saying we should have gotten Hemsky, Gagner, Cogliano, MPS and two first round picks for Heatley.

So his proposal is Penner, Smid, and an unknown 1st for a player who has put up over 350 points in the past 4 seasons?

That is the dumbest Diddle thing I've ever heard.

:^: It actually makes me kind of angry to think that anyone could be that Diddle stupid.
