Nobody does well in Edmonton anymore. I'd be surpised to see Heatley get 35 next year.

no ... just 6-7 million. There' cap space right now is at 5.7 and this alleviates 1asq2 wrote:Sens4thecup wrote:What kind of money does Murray have to play with tomorrow?
Not enough to do anything supremely meaningful.

How is it more balanced? We subtract a great top-6 player for a decent top-6 player and two bottom-of-the-roster types.

Melnyk already gave the go-ahead to spend to the cap and then we have Leclaire!!!cas wrote:You guys need to chill out... This package isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. I'm not a fan of Smid and I don't like that he was part of the package, but I also don't know a whole lot about him other than a few random games here and there.
Cogliano isn't quite the centerpiece I had in mind, but he's a pretty solid acquisition, nonetheless.
As for Penner, I've been saying for a while that he's a player we could use here and actually see him have some success. I'm convinced a lot of you will be pleasantly surprised with the end result of this trade.
All in all, this trade continues to add to our depth, gets rid of a headache, and gives us greater room to maneuvre in the free agent market.
This is a win...even if it isn't a slam dunk. Cheer up and enjoy the fact that this debacle finally has a resolution.
I'm not stocked, but it definitely turns a new leaf.
The Smid deal is kind of strange really? It has to be because he drafted him. He is a first rounder you know. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lee in the minors and eventually traded. Karlsson is going to blow him out of the water.SpezDispenser wrote:How will this go now?
Foligno - Spezza - Alfredsson
Cogliano - Fisher - Fat Penner
Kelly - Regin - Shannon
Ruutu - Winchester - Bass
Kuba - Campoli
Volchenkov - Phillips
Smith - Lee
Scratches: Picard, Smid?
Why did we get Smid? Why?
SpezDispenser wrote:There's a part of me that will not believe this until it's completely official. Ladislav Smid? Why?
Fat Penner, sure, but only if he's the salary dump to two really solid players. Cogliano is solid, Smid is sickeningly redundant.
SpezDispenser wrote:The thought right now has to be: how can we trade some D-man into cap space/prospects. And then, who can get acquire tomorrow to blow the roof off this mother Diddle.
We still need a top 6 IMHO. Or, we need...holy Diddle, we still need a D-man. LOL.
