I bet you weren't saying that in the Stanley Cup Final when they smoked us?

Nobody does well in Edmonton anymore. I'd be surpised to see Heatley get 35 next year.

How will this go now?

Foligno - Spezza - Alfredsson
Cogliano - Fisher - Fat Penner
Kelly - Regin - Shannon
Ruutu - Winchester - Bass

Kuba - Campoli
Volchenkov - Phillips
Smith - Lee

Scratches: Picard, Smid?

Why did we get Smid? Why?

Not enough to do anything supremely meaningful.
no ... just 6-7 million. There' cap space right now is at 5.7 and this alleviates 1

All of our 78 4th pairing D-man:

:p:

Better clear some of this out by the morrow, so we might sign someone cool.

How is it more balanced? We subtract a great top-6 player for a decent top-6 player and two bottom-of-the-roster types.

We could NOT keep Heatley regardless. That wasn't an option and Cogliano has good upside and Penner can score 25 goals playing with Spezza. Smid is better then you are saying he is too.

Not to mention we can now go out and get another player via free agency.

cas wrote:You guys need to chill out... This package isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. I'm not a fan of Smid and I don't like that he was part of the package, but I also don't know a whole lot about him other than a few random games here and there.

Cogliano isn't quite the centerpiece I had in mind, but he's a pretty solid acquisition, nonetheless.

As for Penner, I've been saying for a while that he's a player we could use here and actually see him have some success. I'm convinced a lot of you will be pleasantly surprised with the end result of this trade.

All in all, this trade continues to add to our depth, gets rid of a headache, and gives us greater room to maneuvre in the free agent market.

This is a win...even if it isn't a slam dunk. Cheer up and enjoy the fact that this debacle finally has a resolution.
Cogliano is a bit better than Vermette. Penner can POSSIBLY give us 30 goals and let's not forget, Murray isn't done. Melnyk already gave the go-ahead to spend to the cap and then we have Leclaire!!!

I'm not stocked, but it definitely turns a new leaf.

Exactly.

If you assume Fisher, Penner and Cogliano rebound and put up 25 each (not too much of a stretch and a definite possibility) then add Foligno and Shannon putting up 16-20 goals each, with Spezza and Alfie put up 30+, with Winchester, Ruutu, Bass, and whoever putting up 5 each, then our forward core will have some solid balance and some decent output.

Add in a D-corps that can put a few more pucks in the net and a team system that emphasizes offense without subtracting defensive responsibility, AND two goalies that can actually stop the puck........... There is definite reason for optimism (even if it ends up being misguided Shrug )

The Smid deal is kind of strange really? It has to be because he drafted him. He is a first rounder you know. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lee in the minors and eventually traded. Karlsson is going to blow him out of the water.

The thought right now has to be: how can we trade some D-man into cap space/prospects. And then, who can get acquire tomorrow to blow the roof off this mother Diddle.

We still need a top 6 IMHO. Or, we need...holy Diddle, we still need a D-man. LOL.

Smid has never been anything more than a bottom-pairing defenceman. Why else do you think the Oilers would pursue Souray, Visnovsky et all and whine about needing a defensive defenceman?

Penner is awful. I cringe whenever people talk about him as being a positive.

If I'm wrong, I'll admit it, but I think he really, really brings down the value of the package.

I can't wait to see what happens at midnight if it is revealed that Heatley won't go. If Heatley does not waive, I can't see any team wanting to touch him. You can't bring in a 7.5 million dollar player that fans are predisposed to hate (unless you are Edmonton).

Fat Penner, sure, but only if he's the salary dump to two really solid players. Cogliano is solid, Smid is sickeningly redundant.

Actually he's not...

He may just be the best defensive defense prospect in our system. He clearly Imo hasn't proven to be a true NHL regular and may very well spend a significant portion of this season in Binghamton. You're right that we don't need him in Ottawa (ESPECIALLY with Smith still in town) but if he's given some time to round his game out in the AHL with some proper expectations on him, then we may have found a decent replacement for Phillips, at some point.

Again, I'm not stoked on him, but it is further depth.

Yeah, I really, really dislike this. Tremendously.

We acquire nothing elite, we get worse short-term and don't improve long-term nearly as much as we should be.

This was a chance to really put our team in a good direction, I think we blew it.

Probably 1 million. And Smith is around 3 times as good. So..it evens out.

Smith must be retiring though - there's no way Murray would want yet another shutdown D-man if Smith was coming back. Why would he?
