There's a reason the Islanders spent 18 million dollars to be rid of him. He's a total and complete arsehole in every sense of the word. The definition of a 'me first' player.

How is he an a**hole. By all accounts he is actually a pretty down to earth, decent guy. Milbury gave him a contract he couldnt possibly live up to, gave him the "c" when he isnt that kind of guy or player, and had no one else around him to give him any kind of support.

The salary cap came in after he had that deal signed and the Islanders had to move on. It all falls on Yashin but it wasnt because he was an "a**hole".

I'd rather not get into a great Yashin debate. Let's just say that what went down here was not cool - and I supported him as long as I could (until he turned into a complete arse).

I choose not to get over it, because he's a nothing now. He's playing in Siberia and can't make it back to the NHL. And it couldn't happen to a better guy.

There are plenty of guys who could very well be in the same boat as Yashin if they were not Canadian or American.

Total double standard.

Dude could be a nice guy off the ice, sure...

When it comes to playing hockey he had overwhelming talent and underwhelming heart. Add that to the fact he had bad career advice from day one and an organization that wanted to make it abundantly clear that he chose not to stay... Instant Supervillan....

I don't care one way or the other in terms of grudge but I understand both sides.

Basically bang on Murder.

Doesn't matter anymore anyway. Dude will be lucky to ever smell NHL ice again - and that's a hefty price to pay.

I agree totally with that. The blame is on Yashin, but to say he is an a**hole that didnt deserve to be in the NHL, thats BS.

He should have never been a captain on any team, let alone 2. The position he was put in by his agent and teams reflect just as poorly on the organizations as it does on Yashin. Giving Yashin how ever big of a contract he was given by Milbury was just as stupid and wrong as it was for Yashin to sit out. No one was going to take that Islanders team anywhere especially a guy with questionable heart on the ice. Off the ice he was as dedicated to the game as anyone in the league, that was never an issue.

I never said he didn't deserve to be in the NHL. He was the 2nd overall, had loads of talent and scored 94 points with us.

I did however say he was an a**hole. And...I stand by it. A**hole making 18 million dollars to stay away from the Islanders. :^^^^:

Depends, he is Russian, playing in Russia, with money still coming in from the NHL. Say what you want, but things might not be that bad for Yashin,

People seem to forget Yashin was still a young man who made a mistake when he held out, younger than Spezza is right now. The same people who defend Spezza are the same ones who trash Yashin when really, how much different are they on the ice? Off the ice Yashin actually gave way more back to the Ottawa community than Spezza ever has if people want to really get down to things.

Oh yeah, Yashin is sitting rather pretty right now. Millionaire still getting 'severance pay', still a young man. Only thing that would make life better is if Carol Alt was younger or he could upgrade to one of the Russian female tennis stars...

meh, I always like Yashin both on and off the ice. Met him once at a bar in Toronto (why are so many of my hockey stories in a bar?) and he was a real quiet guy. While alot of the players were living the VIP life in there, Yashin took a few minuits to talk to me, and he was one of the nicer players I've met. Don't wanna sound cliche, but a real down to earth guy. He paid for my drink too.

I have to agree with Neely here.

Well I think the parallels between Yashin and Spezza are remarkable to be honest. I would love to know what Spezza gets a pass on things because of his age, yet, Yashin doesnt.

Spezza still has never equaled Yashin's best year in Ottawa with a much tighter league wide structure defensivly, way more clutching and grabing, and not even close to the kind of tallent his wingers had vs Spezza's. Off the ice was no comparrisson either, Yashin gave way back to the Ottawa community than Spezza ever has as well.

How has the Senators organization changed in the last 10 years?

Easy answer, 1 playoff run in a weak Eastern Conferance where The Sens go blown out in the finals.

Yup, there is a while bunch of BS to see through when it comes to professional athletes. People in Ottawa, it seems, have a real hard time seperating real life with the actual person they just see and hear about on TV.

Yashin was a good guy, gave a lot of time and money to the Ottawa community, and he played well for the Sens when he wore the uniform. I dont think he was ever a guy that a team should be built around, but at one point he might have been the best player the Sens ever had, like it or not.

No arguements, she just ain't my cup 'o tea. If she was dating Ron Greshner before you... eh...

Me thinks if I was a millionaire Russian Hockey Star returning home to the KHL I would be probing the local tennis clubs because they seem to manufacture hotties...
