I bet the $10mil, $8mil, $6mil, and $5.5 mil that are being paid to Heatley, Spezza, Fisher, and Alfie, respectively this year aren't meaningless to Melnyk

Doesn't change the fact that those numbers mean absolutely nothing in terms of the salary cap. The total salary amount divided by the years in the contract = the only number that matters in the grand scheme of things.

So you're saying that when Melnyk is paying that group 5, 4, 3.8 and 3, respectively, that he'll care less about losing?

Haha, guys don't take it seriously. I was just making a crack about how much money Melnyk is dishing out of his own pocket this year. I know it means nothing towards the cap.

Oh, I hear you. I'm just tired of people quoting the *meaningless* year-to-year salary cap figure to slam a player, when all that really matters is his cap number. The number is meaningless, why bring it up at all, much less use it to define a player or comment on his performance? It's equivocating at best, dishonest at worst.

I didn't slam anyone. All I said is that Vermette will not get the same opportunity as Fisher because he makes far less and I used the quoted the salary. If I had quoted the cap number, it would still mean the same thing.

Sometimes stating facts appear to be a slam because the facts aren't pretty.

Exactly. And the fact is that Vermette has had all kinds of opportunity to grab a top 6 spot and has repeatedly failed. That's not Mike Fisher's fault, or Fisher's salary's fault. That's just a slammin', unpretty fact.

Do I think Vermette can be a top-6 player? Yes. But he didn't do himself any favours with his first 25 games this year.

From an owner's perspective, it's certainly not meaningless. If Fisher was traded this summer, it would certainly be appropriate for the owner to say "I didn't get much (or I got a lot, whatever the perspective) from my 6M$ investment last year ...

Are you saying the last 24 games should have no say in defining Vermette's role on this team or what kind of player he is. He does have 20 points in that span, which is 1 less point than Fisher has all season.
