I would give up one of our 2nds as well. Keep in mind Barker has never shown himself to be as good in the NHL as Mez was in his rookie season, and the 'Hawks are in a pernicious situation contracts-wise.

Plus, they just, well, owe us.

Too bad Barker isn't a right-handed defenceman.

I won't lie, I'd be a happy man if that trade went through.

Mind you, Barker's about as defensively inept as Picard, but is much, much better on the PP. And we're getting him a few years into his development.

I'm very skeptical about this.

Considering it's the third time Barker has been linked to Ottawa.

The few people I've talked to haven't had anything positive to say about the rumours.

The general feelings, that I've gotten, is that it is just a rumour that has gotten out of hand.

We probably won't resign Shannon and PIcard is out if COwen and Karlsson are in. It woudl be basically Barker for a 1st. Our PP wiould be much better and that could make us win the division.

I checked this with my sources in Chicago, one of whom covers the Hawks for NHL Radio.

Nothing to report.

But, who knows.

Seeing as the Blackhawks are now the number one defensive team in the NHL after beating the Canucks 1-0 at GM Place, making a change to the d-corps at this point would seem odd.

But IF--we are talking IF--Picard comes to Chicago, he could become the top 4 d-man his potential suggests, under the excellent coaching of Joel Quenneville.

i would love that deal IF it's our(or better yet SJS) 2nd rounder. i absolutely hate giving up 1st rounders . in the hopes that we can rebuild our offencive depth we need our top pick.

If we add Barker for a 2nd round pick, ummm, that would be fantastic.

I'll believe it when I see it though but this is still the guy that was the next guy drafted after Ovechkin and Malkin... The potential is HUGE with Barker, doesnt matter what hand he shoots the puck.

A young defense core consisting of Barker, Karlsson, Cowen, Lee, and Wierchoich... that's about as compplete a young defense as you can have. Add in Phillips, A Train, Carkner, Kuba... That's a strength going forward.

I think it's bull$hit that the league would take issue with such a deal. Montreal unloaded Samsonov the very same way and more recently Boston made a "deal" for Patty Eaves...

I can't see Chicago giving away Barker for our castoffs and a pick. Unless Barker is rrrreally underachieving which I am not sure that he is. He has 11 pts in 22 games and he is still only 23.

Picard is 24, has 9 points in 11 games and is a +2 and he certainly isn't making over 3 million bucks.

Picard and Barker aren't really comparable though are they? The guy was a third overall pick vs Picard who didn't crack the lineup coming out of camp. Barker is an offensive defenseman looking to get PP time behind Seabrooke and Campbell, where Ottawa is just begging for someone to be able to quarterback the PP.

Fundamentally if this is the rumour... Picard who I describe above, Shannon who only cracks the lineup due to injury and a pick for a guy who has the potential to be a top 4 d-man who can quarterback the powerplay and hass a solid shot from the point (that he can get through). I would do it in a heartbeat but I can't see them doing it.

He's playing on their 3rd pairing though apparently. A PP specialist for 3 million a year? Like Picard +. But...it still would be an upgrade over Picard, so yeah, game on.

And I have a feeling Murray can be a persistent little bastard as well.
