It never hurts to have Lidstrom either. Or a point-producer like Rafalski. Or guys like Lebda and Kronwall.

Look at Anaheim. Pronger and Niedermayer. Beauchemin and O'Donnell.

Those teams had the guys on the backend that can get the job done going both ways.

Although Phillips and Volchenkov are standouts (usually) defensively, they don't have that other dimension to their game. It's too easy to play against guys that are not a threat with the puck.

Buffalo, Pittsburgh and New Jersey didn't have much success against them in '06-'07.

They also traded Thornton too.

But they had Patrice Bergeron in the system. We don't.

Yeah, but it's not like guys who are threats with the puck like Redden, Meszaros, Corvo or Preissing fared any better.

That's true too.

They also signed Savard after the recognized what he could bring to the team. If they keep Thornton they dont draft Kessel, they dont draft Lucic, and they probably dont sign Chara or Savard.

Trading Thornton was the best thing for Boston and their current team proves that. The return its self on Thornton could have been a lot better, but it was the right move. (although Sturm is playing great there as well.)

Boston took a hit for a few years, drafted well and developed their players. They got rid of what they thought was the problem, plain and simple.

Meszaros is hardly a threat with the puck, he has a good shot, thats where it ends and I have maintained that for a while. Its being proven in Tampa he isnt even close to a number 1 guy.

Corvo is Corvo and is a big as a goof as anyone in the NHL. Priesing was out 5th D man, a lot like Meszaros was during his best season.

Do we really want to get into Redden?

Whether it was a bad trade or not that team wouldnt be close to what it is with Thornton.

You're looking at this the wrong way, trade Fisher, keep Spezza, then everyone's happy.

Just this year and next though, then it becomes increasingly easier to trade him. Limited NTC, very limited NTC. It's almost as if Murray had a plan...

Nope, I just look at the tallent they developed with Thornton while he was there and without, simple as that.

Chara wouldnt be there, Savard wouldnt be there (who is ahead of Thornton in scoring). The team would not be the complete team they are with Thornton being the center peice, hell, Glen Murray may still be Thorntons right hand man.

Then you're stuck with Spezza for the next 6, and if he continues along these lines he is now, its going to be a long 6 years.

Fact of the matter is if his play continues into next like it is now and he has a NTC for 6 years, this team wont win, not with him as the number 1 guy playing like he is. People will be furious.
