Dzingel is actually worth quite a bit on the trade market because of his low cap hit. Teams pressed against the cap can afford to take him on without having to move money from their current payroll

It is.  But then theres dzingel too, surely ottawa's not serious about resigning him too?

Depends what his price is. If there's a chance he signs at a decent contract then might as well play him. He's not worth a Dung ton on trade market.

To play devil's advocate, why would Dzingel take a penny less than 5 million knowing he's due to be a UFA.  And then, why would Ottawa even entertain paying him that for more than 1 second?

I dunno. I really have no attachment to Dzingel to be honest, don't care if he stays or goes.
Ditto. I'd rather not pay him 5 mil though.

Dzingel is worth a 2nd and a mid-level prospect IMO

Unless management knows FOR SURE that someone is about to sign a new contract, they pending UFAs should be benched. So, yes, there is optimism for a Stone re-signing, but it still makes me nervous as hell. Dzingel should likely be benched/traded, unless he’s $5M or less for no more than 4 years (which I don’t think he’d take).

From TSN.ca, on Duchene:

"According to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia, about five teams have expressed interest in the 28-year-old, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie also listed the Predators and Blue Jackets as teams who are interested in Duchene, but said the Jets may have a different target on the Senators."

The Jets "want" Stone but I think are better off with a point producing center on their team. I imagine they don't think they can re-sign Duchene whereas they have a shot to re-sign Stone.

I want to re-sign Stone and Duchene. Stone alone would be amazing. Can we please have that after the last 16 months? Please?

That’s my opinion but he might go for more because his cap hit.

Edmonton should really take a look at him in hopes of extending him. Although they’re gonna need to clear cap space if they hope to extend him

Part of me is ready to accept we are likely drafting in the top 3 for the 2 drafts after this one that I’m ready to accept the extra picks and prospects for Duchene and stone if it means building a young powerhouse for the future.
That powerhouse won’t happen if Melnyk stays the owner as players will leave but an ownership change in the next two is a good probability as he won’t be able to absorb the costs of loosing

I hate Melnyk so much. Barf.

If we sign Stone, I think the rebuild goes quickly with studs like Batherson, Tkachuk, White etc. But who knows...Sad

Nothing like trading away more 30 goal scorers before their prime years for peanuts.

Meh, I'm not a metrics guy, but Dzingel doesn't drive the offense the way a Stone or Duchene does, he's good at finishing chances, but I'd rather get assets for him than pay him 5 mil a year

IMO Ottawa has been pretty good with their asset management. With the exception of Karlsson (which IMO is still tbd) the Sens won out by not extending/trading Spezza, Methot, Brassard, Turris, Phaneuf, Heatley and possibly even Hoffman. Sure, some of the returns weren't great but they avoided paying big money to regressing players. Even Hoffman may not pass his career high for points on a significantly better Panthers team. He's also -20 this year. Karlsson IMO won't sign with SJS. We got a pretty big haul for one year of Karlsson in SJ. I could be wrong here, but Norris and a 1st, plus a top-nine in Balcers and Tierney, a conditional 1st/2nd, and a serviceable d-man was a great return.

Lagoon - you have to be patient. The best teams in the league all suffered periods of being bottom feeders. Chicago, LA, San Jose, Calgary, Washington, Toronto, etc. They've all sucked for a long time before getting good again. If you're upset about not getting Jack Hughes, I get it. But he's not a generational talent. I'd much rather Tkachuk. And there is always next year's 1st and SJS 1st who will probably be without Karlsson and Thornton.

Signing players to big money contracts if they don't want to be here or out of desperation is the worst thing to do. Look at Bobby Ryan. Worst contract in the NHL aside from Phaneuf. So ya, signing Dzingel to a big money contract right now doesn't make a lot of sense. Stone is different - he's got intangibles that both Duchene and Dzingel don't have. If they sign Dzingel to a contract that makes sense then I am all for it but to "trade away a 30 goal scorer before their prime year for peanuts" is an incorrect statement. You'll be cursing his name when he doesn't have Duchene feeding him the puck and we're paying him $6M a year to put up 40 points.

To sign Duchene, Stone, Dzingel while expecting different results next year is lunacy. Even with Karlsson and Hoffman this core was the 2nd worst team in the league. In order to be drastically better you need to make drastic changes.

Brown, Batherson, White, Tkachuk, Chlapik, Balcers, Formenton, Norris, Chabot, JBD, Tychonik, Gustavsson, Hogberg - this is your future. Add in a few pieces from this year's and next year's draft, a prospect or two from some trades, and a couple surprises like D'Accord or Crookshank maybe, and you have the foundation of something that could be really good for a lot of years to come.

Don't get stuck in the moment. Try to enjoy the ride.
