The day Tavares left was the first day of their rebuild. Rebuild doesn’t mean you have to suck every year. I can’t see them landing many top players, they never have in their existence just like the sens

I disagree. Had you did not have Barzal maybe so. But he’s shown he can pick up this team and go. If they ad a mat duchene this summer they might even get better

They’re not done after all but....closer

I just don't see Duchene being interested. Barzal is their top guy and Duchene would want to be the top guy IMO. I'd say their current roster other than Barzal and a few guys is very similar to ours (with Stone and Duchene) they just have way better coaching and have been getting great goaltending (maybe unsustainable from Lehner) all year. This was a team projected to finish near the bottom.

The problem with NYI, IMO, is if I'm a free agent I would always want to go to NYR instead if I'm going to New York.

When you speak of top pairing defensen don't forget most teams only have 1; the other guy is a "complementary" player, like Methot or Kuba were with Karlsson. Our problem is that Chabot is a lefty so we need a rightie to complement him. Ceci is not it. Wolanin has the wrong skillset to complement Chabot, so DeMelo is it, even if he's more of a second or third pairing guy, by himself.

Ideally we need a slight upgrade over DeMelo. Is there another RHD who needs a change of scenery that we could swap for Ceci?

Trouba? Goligoski? ... Hamilton?

Saw today Columbus is interested in Duchene. Could haul a good return if they trade Panarin for picks/assets back.

2 1sts and Milano/Foudy would be a decent return.

They won't pay 2 1sts for a pending UFA.

Well, it sure looks like the Red Blacks are saying "hold my beer" to the Sens. Losing their #1 QB, #1 RB, #1 WR and SirVincent as well (not sure where he ranks). They'll go into the season with Dominique Davis, who they only trotted out on 3rd Ave 1 situations.

Remember when you used to say at every opportunity that Barry Trotz was the most overrated coach in the league?

I’m interested, how do you guys categorize possible returns in turn of what we’re looking for?

I have a hierarchy of what we would want.

Early 1sts (not likely)
Blue chip prospects(further along in development, better projections)
Late 1sts
Top 6/top 4 potential prospects
Rest of picks
Boom or bust prospects
Average prospects (usually we always find those in the late rounds)

Obviously returns with quality instead of quantity.

I feel Ottawa prioritizes average prospects to late picks or boom or bust prospects. Guys that you know will likely make the NHL but more likely 4rth liners or marginal bottom pairing guys. It’s bothered me in the past because we always seem to have guys not be resigned because we have too many of these guys.

All I want is blue chip prospects and 1st rounders. I'm tired of quantity over quality.

I completely agree. But I’m sure Dorion is trying to get more and if he can... let’s see if he can.

The other thing with Dorion is why he judges to be a good prospect. Th record since he’s been head of scouting is mixed. Amateur scouting has had its peaks but proscouting has left to be desired at times.

He’s personally scouting Winnipeg Jets and the moose so that could be interesting.

The Jets have some interesting pieces. Connor, Laine, Trouba, Petan, Dano, Comrie are all RFAs next season. Jets will be in cap hell. If they trade for Stone I expect them to send money back.

Connor and Trouba for Stone and Ceci.

Do you do it?

Yeah, I'd probably do Connor and Trouba for Stone and Ceci. The problem is I have no idea what new contracts for Connor and Trouba will look like...but being RFAs they could be resigned without too much hassle.

Exactly my thoughts.
Stone could put up crazy numbers with better linemates. Connor would likely regress but is younger so there is still upside.

If Stone won't sign then I think any team would take that offer. Trouba is up and down but Connor would be better than any 1st or prospect from other teams.

What do you guys think? First Ottawa trade announced Sunday night? Monday morning? Or are the Sens gonna cut it close to the deadline?

I can’t see the parties interested wanting to wait it out. Some will cut bait and go for a cheaper player to acquire taking leverage away from Dorion. Which if we take a look at how mismanaged this team has been is exactly what’s gonna happen...

I fly to Cuba on Sunday so I imagine the terrible internet connections are going to prevent me from getting news often. I took trade deadline day off, hopefully it’s worth it.
