If it was $1M you might. If you signed a contract and by retiring you cost your company millions (in this case, in cap recapture), you might. It's clearly different when your departure handcuffs the team.

Regardless, I guess we'll find out if he retires soon enough.

Obviously, I find the "he made enough money so he'll leave lots on the table" argument pretty silly. There's a huge difference between an injured/unhealthy NHL player retiring by choice when they could just collect the money sitting at home (like Hossa) and a person retiring early from a job that doesn't pay them for sitting at home (like you).

NHL is a different beast. Early retirement means your give up future earnings. You are not on a contract.

If Hossa retired he would lose the rest of his contact. The team would still be hit with $4.2 cap hit. Lose-lose. Only way he wins is he stays away for yep seasons then unretires and gets another contract for more than he lost. No guarantee there.

If he is bought out, he receives less money overall. He can make up the difference by getting another contract. He probably could but it would mean moving his family.  How much more could he make?  Plus it's not really his option, it's the team's, and buying him out will hurt in cap space.  No incentive for the team to do it.  Win-lose at best.

And of course with LTIR Hossa keeps his measly $4M, sounds like with his kids, and the team only pays what's not covered by insurance (couple hundred K). They get cap relief up to the full $4.2M.  Win-win.

He won't retire I don't think, it's bad though apparently. Probably hoping they can come up with a fabric that doesn't cause him issue

Wow, this trading Phaneuf business just won't go away! I'd really like to understand what the Dorion plan is.
Apperently other teams are calling his agent to see if he would waver on other teams.

Here's the part that doesn't make sense. If other teams are calling would they not be calling Dion's agent and not Dorion? Certainly the team's on his no fly list would not be calling Dorion as it's not under his control.

Also, it's well known from even before the draft that Dion was on the block. Dorion has already talked to all the GMs that are interested. Who else lost a top four D-man?

Garrioch's best ever:

"Because of Phaneuf’s decision, which he had every right to make, the Senators lost defenceman Marc Methot to the Golden Knights in the expansion draft."

It's a strange one, this phaneuf situation.

Because of Dorion's decision, which he had every right to make, the Senators lost defenseman Marc Methot but did not lose one of forwards Ryan Dzingel, Zack Smith or Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

Because of Dorion's decision, which he has every right to make, the Senators lost defenseman Marc Methot but did not lose forward Ryan Dzingel and a draft pick.

Or something like that. Plus the nearly $5M cap relief.

Looking back, I'm not sure why we didn't expose Smith and Dzingel and protect Methot.

The Alfie hits the hockey Hall of Fame ballot on Monday for the first time, per Garrioch.

I dunno who he's up against. It's an interesting debate that will ultimately be settled by whoever votes on this.

Best case scenario would have been to swap Ceci for a forward worth protecting and let nature take it's course. Not this clusterfugg.

I think we (and I mean some of *you*) are seriously overvaluing Methot's contribution to the overall success of the team. Ev had said most of this before but I'll repeat:
- Karlsson made Kuba look fantastic
- anyone playing with Karlsson has looked good (and he's pod with just about everyone)
- Methot was not top two in ice time; he was just the most frequent of Karlsson's many partners
- Karlsson's possession and offensive stats were actually better with most bother defensive partners (smaller sample size, of course) than Methot, and this goes back to previous years -- for example Wiercioch
- Sens defensive play was awful with Methot but before Phaneuf got here

We should all be a lot more worried about trading away Phaneuf than the loss of Methot.

It won't be a single player who will replace Methot, but between Claesson, Chabot, Harpur and, of course, Phaneuf, I think we will be ok.

Clutch/Flea, can we update the poll to something relevant? Like who will be Karlsson's main defensive partner?

I like Phaneuf better than Methot but Methot was one of our best 3 defensemen and we lost him for nothing. Once he's replaced I think *we*'ll be less upset about it.

The more I think about it, the more I think Chabot is hugely legit and there's no better time than the regular season to get him in there and get him settled.

Maybe a depth dman signing, but it might be time to let Chabot loose.

Because it would have likely meant loosing Pageau.
