It makes a lot of sense, but then that also leaves us with just $10M of space for this coming season. If we're resigning Hoff and Ceci, there's not much room for additions beyond that.

The only way that they do that is if they aren't planning on making the playoffs this year and think that the pick/prospect will help them soon. I think it's a big stretch for Ottawa to provide that kind of favour right now.

You MUST make the playoffs this year. Karlsson 3 years away from UFA, the time is now to strike, instead of taking on a dead cap hit, they should be looking at every opportunity to acquire another (super) star.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have 13 players making 63.6 million dollars. So...~7 million to make up a 20 man roster. Things are gonna be TIGHT.

LA has 57.5 committed to 12 players, so not as bad, but still...

Columbus has 59.3 committed to 13 players (holy crap!!)

Chicago has 60 million committed to 9 players. 9!

Montreal has 54.9 committed to 11 players.

Minny has 61.41 committed to 12 players + 1.0 in a buyout to Matt the idiot Cooke

Tampa Bay has 51.4 committed to 14 players, but need to sign Stamkos, Killorn, Kucherov (oh boy!) and then has to decide what to do about signing Hedman (oh boy!), Bishop (oh dear!) and Drouin come July 1st, so they don't have it hanging over their heads all season, like Stamkos.

Some of the teams are gonna have some major issues, it isn't even a question of how do they manage it, it's a question of who is being traded or bought out.

Hedman could easily make 10 million from 4, Kucherov is an RFA, but he could go up from 0.900 k to anywhere from 4-7 million depending on how long they want to lock him up. Bishop make ~6 last season and he's not gonna go down in price, only up. Killorn is pretty good, but his increase won't be as dramatic, from 2.55 to around 4? Not sure.

Oh...and just when you feel comfortable as a Gm, you have to look at Johnson and Palat. Last year of both of their 3.33 million dollar deals.

Good luck sorting all of this out Yzerman...

I don't see any scenario where they resign Bishop. They could only protect one of their 2 guys in the expansion draft. I think the plan all along was to roll with Vasilevsky after next year.

That makes Bishop a solid trade chip. If they're resigning stamkos, that would free up some space.
