It's not just the contract. Even at league minimum you can't have a player with 1 assist after 20 games.

They're called defencemen :D

Smith and Neil not much better but still a fraction of Greening's cost. Issue: one-dimensional player. His one dimension? Unknown.

Neil has 4 goals and 3 assists (can't compare that to 1 assist) and leads the team in hits by a mile -- even after missing a bunch of games. No comparison there.

However Smith is a valid point. He's played in 27 games (vs. 20 for Greening) and gotten more icetime in those games, yet Greening has 30 shots to Smith's 31. So you could argue that Greening generates more scoring chances and that, eventually, that would lead to higher production (there's only 2 points separating them). But Smith's lower cap hit and the fact that he's a center likely trumps him. Plus Smith is on the IR -- not sure if you can waive an injured player.

Smith right now is an after thought, lets see how he performs under a new coach once he's healed up. That said though Pageau has basically taken his spot, pretty sad when he brings more grit than Smith currently does.

What happened to the guy (Smith)?. He was looking to be that perfect, 3rd line gritty, will go with most guy, kind of center. He's just completely thrown in the towel the last season or two.

Smith's case is weird, because it's not even like he decided to rest on his laurels after getting a long term deal. He's only got two years left, but it's kind of like he figured that was good enough for him and threw it the towel. It's not like he's going out there throwing hits and fists to keep his ice time.

By the sounds of things, the way MacLean treated guys Smith very well may have said "screw this, you throw the hits and fists". I have no idea what happened, this is speculation but it could very well be that of a guy who quit on his coach.

Which seems like a weird thing to do considering that affects himself more than it did PMac...it's not like Smith was a core player and could get PMac fired like Karlsson did.

Yah no idea... Smith is a guy I truly I have no idea what happened with. Quiet guy off the ice, used to go with anyone, played with passion, was pretty decent in the community... sucks because I really liked him as a player.

The only people being fisted are the fans who are watching their playoff hopes go down the crapper because of the product on the ice.

The one team I can see claiming Greening is Buffalo. If they plan to move guys out and only want picks or prospects back in return they are going to need a body that can play in the NHL. Tim Murray by all accounts was the guy that signed Greening to that deal as well so... but that's the only fit I see for Greening. Never a bad thing to surround youth with decent vets off the ice who will set a good example even if their play on it isn't up to snuff.

I don't think Buffalo is a budget team so it's possible.

Is there a chance smith is playing through an injury he sustained before the start of the season? It is a bit puzzling as he really doesn't have that drive he once had. There was quite a bit of interest around the league in acquiring him in the past. If he could come back and show his drive is still there there could be a market for him in the summer

I think some guys show you everything early on and regress, like greening and smith. Pageau goes out there and created chances, smith is where offence goes to die.

Emelin gets 5 and a game for this hit on Spezza. Looked like Spezza turned. Anyhow, nasty cut on the nose (visor?).

Not sure this was discussed, but Cameron split up Turris/MacArthur at practice. Lines were:

MacArthur-Zibanejad-Ryan
Michalek-Turris-Stone
Hoffman-Pageau-Lazar
Condra-Legwand-Neil

Chiasson was extra.
