I actually like the wise frugal spending on the team.  It's the ability to retain our talent that concerns me.  I don't want to be a feeder team for the rest of the league.

Look at St.Louis after their ownership problems were finally resolved.  They are now pretty much a cap team just having to retain our talent.  We'll have to be that way in the future if we want to keep our prospects once they break out and earn their payday.

So Friedman was on TGOR this morning and apparently Mike Babcock told him on air yesterday that when Holland and Babcock called Alfie, they were prepared to do a sell job but after a couple minutes they realized Alfie has already decided to join them.

Almost like he was pissed off already at the Sens...perhaps due to a lowball offer and expectation he would take another discount.

I didn't listen to it but I read that Friedman apparently also said that Alfie's agent (JP Barry) was pissed at Melnyk over the Heatley trade request and encouraged Alfie to leave.

Ah yes that guy who's never really won anything in his career and is not good enough for Hockey Canada will lead our team. Wonderful Laugh1

Steve Yzerman year for Jason. He is the leader Ottawa deserves and needs.

JP Berry is everything that's wrong with players today and agents like him. It's not on the same level of NFL of MLB but he's still a guy that doesn't care about anything other than money.

As for Spezza, it's his turn to carry the ball and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't. To this point yah, he's been on some teams who have underperformed on epic proportions from Belleville in the OHL to Bingo in the AHL to multiple teams in the NHL and Internationally... but being a captain of an NHL team should have a positive effect on a guy who no one really believes in outside of Ottawa and even then a lot don't believe inside of Ottawa either. People grow up and he has but his one ice attitude has to as well. He deserves a chance he can't cut it as a captain in Ottawa and if things go badly you say good bye in 2 years and give the team to Karlsson. Either way, he has earned the opportunity to sink or swim.

The other way around. Melnyk was pissed at Barry over the Heatley thing and therefore a lot of mistrust. There is zero reason for the Heatley camp to be pissed off after demanding a trade, refusing to go anywhere except one place, then getting paid $4M for nothing.

Bottom line is Alfie left because he wanted to. Barry wouldn't do anything without his consent.
Barry and the Sens may not be the best of friends after Heatley but Alfie wouldn't have signed with Detroit and uproot his family because JP Barry isn't on Melnyk's Christmas card list.
