OK, doesn't mean he needs to take more than market value now. Guy's been making millions for 17 years.

I dunno, if I were him I would've wanted a little extra cash.  We offered $4Mish, he originally asked for $6Mish.  If we weren't a budget team, I bet we pay that $6M (or come back and offer $5.5M) and be done with it.

Read Friedman's article, linked above.  It's excellent.

He was making $1M in his last year. They offered to renegotiate, but he didn't know if he'd be returning or not.

They bought out his last contract and renegotiated because he was being underpaid. I don't know how much of that was Melnyk trying to correct the past or Alfie/J.P. but it got done.

I really like Boston. But the reason why it became Detroit was because I got a really good impression of them. And they had many left handed centers in the team. I think that as a right-handed player I will fit in better. I will probably get more chances to shoot and scoring opportunities next season.

Really, he cares about scoring more goals.

The way Chiarelli describes it they all but had Alfie until Iggy came calling.  Alfie became option B in a hurry.

Shawn Simpson says that no one will even know who Alfredsson is in Detroit. Amazing!

There's 6 guys on the roster who know who he is.

Alfie screwed up really bad here, like epically.  Only thing that will ever help him save face is for the Wings to win the cup and they are a long shot at this point to do it.  A lineup that old up front playing in a division where they may have to fight every single night... esh, they are going to be forced to play a game that they do not like playing on a lot of nights.

I think he's just trying to add reasons for leaving after the fact.

Yep, saving face by giving a hockey reason he's hoping most fans will not dare argue with.

His best production always came playing with Spezza -- a RHS center.

I'd love to be insulted like that.

Exactly! I love alfie, but the blind hate towards the owner is getting a little sickening. I'm glad for alfie that he took those hometown discounts to stick around Ottawa and the city responded by putting him on an unmatched pedestal. Evidently, that didn't mean jack in negotiations.

It was a matter of pride and nothing to do with money or stanley cup. Simple as that. Sens took him for granted and paid the price. I sincerely hope they've learned a valuable lesson on how to deal with longtime players.

Both sides screwed up for sure but again, everyone put Alfie on that pedestal and figured he was better than he was.  He wasn't, he's a professional athlete at the end of the day, through and through.  Held out one year, demanded a trade another, bailed on his team (his fault or not).  Sounds exactly like the typical athlete to me. Also, at the end of the day he didn't lead the team to a championship with some fantastic teams, got close and was the best player while doing it but it didn't happen.

When did he demand a trade?

Won't have to. The budget will ensure that we have to move guys by the time they develop, mature and command big dollars.

The Alfie worship is getting really nauseating. He has done a lot for this city and the team but at the end of the day he was an employee of the Sens. He was free to do whatever he wanted.

If he REALLY wanted to come back he would have worked something out like in the past. If the initial rejection of his proposal by Murray turned him off that much he wasn't really that keen on coming back. At no point did he or his agent contact Ottawa with a "How can we make this work?"

I think Alfie's decision was very heat of the moment to be honest. There is no way that he could have been thinking "well what if I play them in the playoffs?" Honestly, he probably forgot he was in that division still until it actually hit him.

Epic Diddle up by Alfie - and I'll say it again, we can't have that kind of attitude on this team - especially as Captain. Don't believe in us? Go away - and he did - and we're a better team today then we were last year.

Alfie left a lot of money on the table over the years, taking hometeam discounts to play here. I guess Murray/Melnyk kind of thought that would happen one more time, whereas I guess Alfie thought that he would finally get market value on a one year deal. It's not like he had to take less cash so we'd have more cap space. He was asked to take less cash, AGAIN, because our owner's finances are in the toilet.

We brought Clarkson in to town to romance him for a day in some hope of signing him. What did we do to sign Alfie? We offered him $4M, rejected his offer of $6M and then left it at that. Then apparently we asked him what he wanted in terms of salary. Well, you dumb female parental unit diddlers, he already told you...$6M!

Both were playing hardball with each other and with very little time before free agency, they shouldn't have been.

Anyways, I really hope alfie comes back to town for a farewell tour and to properly say goodbye to the fans. Do his interviews, get his story out, whatever he's gotta do. It would go a long way in mending the relationship and quite frankly, ottawa fans deserve a proper goodbye. Tweets won't do.
