OK, doesn't mean he needs to take more than market value now. Guy's been making millions for 17 years.

I dunno, if I were him I would've wanted a little extra cash. We offered $4Mish, he originally asked for $6Mish. If we weren't a budget team, I bet we pay that $6M (or come back and offer $5.5M) and be done with it.

Read Friedman's article, linked above. It's excellent.

Everything I've read says that the performance bonuses for Alfie in Detroit are shoe-ins, so he'll get his $5.5M. Don't be naive. We lowballed him one last time and it pushed him over the edge.

Then Diddle 'em. If he cares about money I don't want him on this team.

Extremely selfish act by our so-called captain.

Sidney Crosby has been playing under market value for his entire career.

If he REALLY cared about money, he would've been out of here long ago. But there's only so many times a guy can take a discount before it irks him. It was not extremely selfish, it was an insult by our team.

I really like Boston. But the reason why it became Detroit was because I got a really good impression of them. And they had many left handed centers in the team. I think that as a right-handed player I will fit in better. I will probably get more chances to shoot and scoring opportunities next season.

Really, he cares about scoring more goals.

Not that handedness ever matters, tho, remember.

Except 1/2 of Alfie's goals come on the off wing where it's easier for a righty to get him the puck. Honestly, has Alfie always been this thick or did people in Ottawa and Sens fans have such high opinions of the guy we couldn't see this kind of stuff? Maybe it's best he isn't in Ottawa anymore actually, there has been nothing to come out in the last few days that makes me say "well, I can see his side of things".

Alfie screwed up really bad here, like epically. Only thing that will ever help him save face is for the Wings to win the cup and they are a long shot at this point to do it. A lineup that old up front playing in a division where they may have to fight every single night... esh, they are going to be forced to play a game that they do not like playing on a lot of nights.

I think he's just trying to add reasons for leaving after the fact.

I wouldn't call offering alfie $4M low-balling him. he probably saw what Gonchar was getting and maybe would have settled at $5M. I'm sure sens would have gone to that if they worked harder (alfie too). No way to slice it, they both screwed up royally on this one.

You also forget we bought out his last contract so he'd get a more lucrative deal. Yes he played below market value because he gave the hometown discount. Where'd that go? I expect anyone who's been a part of the team for 18 years to soften a little bit on the demands.

Lets not forget Alfie has in the past demanded a trade and held out for more money. Yah, it was a while ago and a lot happened in that time but he's not a guy that allowed himself to get pushed around and has forced the Sens hands at times. Again, everyone was so blinded by Alfie, the captain, the hero that everyone was just so naive that he's the same old professional athlete that a lot of other guys are.

He bailed on the team, plain and simple. The reason he bailed? He was insulted. C'est la vie man, move on.

The way Chiarelli describes it they all bu had Alfie until Iggy came calling. Alfie became option B in a hurry.

Guy was taken in the 6th round in his 4th year of eligibility. If not for this team he'd have been playing in the SEL or maybe dropped hockey and tried out as a tennis pro (he was very good). He would not have made $55M and achieved the status of a minor god.

Shawn Simpson says that no one will even know who Alfredsson is in Detroit. Amazing!

He was making $1M in his last year. They offered to renegotiate, but he didn't know if he'd be returning or not.

They bought out his last contract and renegotiated because he was being underpaid. I don't know how much of that was Melnyk trying to correct the past or Alfie/J.P. but it got done.

There's 6 guys on the roster who know who he is.

Yep, saving face by giving a hockey reason he's hoping most fans will not dare argue with.

His best production always came playing with Spezza -- a RHS center.
